What Works: Success means getting your mindset right
I’m on a mission. Maybe you are too. Maybe there’s something you want so bad you can taste it. That might be a weight loss goal. It might be an ideal relationship. You could be striving for a revenue goal or promotion. Whatever you want, you increase your chances of getting it if you plan to succeed.
How do you plan to succeed?
Setting yourself up for success takes discipline and the ability, when discouraging words enter from your mind or the mouths of others, to keep your eyes on the prize. This discipline comes in a number of ways.
Believe it’s possible! If I don’t believe that I am going to be down 20 pounds by summer, I won’t be. One day at a time, my disbelief will keep me from making good choices. If I don’t believe it’s possible, why try? Why change habits if that habit change isn’t going to net me anything?
When you don’t believe it’s possible, you look for reasons it’s not possible. The justification machine turns on and spits out reasons why failure is not only possible, it’s probable.
Plan to succeed and execute that plan. Mindset is only part of success. You have to believe it’s possible, plan to do it, and then do it. This planning to do it is important. Plans don’t always work out as envisioned. Yet if you just plan to do it, commit to it, and actually do it — you will be surprised by the results.
The reason why planning to succeed and executing is so important to do TOGETHER is you can create a lot of fear planning things that are hard to execute. That’s why I recommend planning ONE thing. Just plan one thing that will get you to your goal.
I had this whole period of my life where I would load my calendar up with stuff and then I just wouldn’t do it. My calendar was absolutely meaningless. Sure, I looked productive. But my activity wasn’t even getting done! I would give myself excuses not to utilize the block time I had created for projects.
Let your commitments be your motivators. When you commit to something, you decide to breathe through the discomfort and just START. Just walk out the door and take a walk. Just start that big project that has been looming over your shoulders. Just go on a date with that person. If you need to be a perfectionist at something, be a perfectionist at keeping your commitments and watch how much momentum you gain.
Finally, see it through. Don’t quit. You are worthy and deserving of your goal, no matter what it is. Don’t quit. Don’t quit when your head says so or others say so. If you want it bad enough, go out and get it! Sometimes different opportunities will present themselves. Follow the flow of opportunity (or Crappertunity) and see where it goes!
