Digital Donation Drive: Donate your old devices to the Carson City Library
It’s the time of year when new digital devices are given as gifts, but what exactly happens to the old ones? Oftentimes they’re put in a box and left behind. The Carson City Library has launched a plan to save gently used and in good working order older models of a number of digital tools.
Between Nov. 24 and Jan. 31, patrons can make a tax-deductible donation of working devices to the Carson City Library at its “Information Desk” inside the main branch at 900 N. Roop Street.
Internet enabled tablets like Apple’s iPad or Samsung’s Galaxy; digital cameras (still and video); e-readers like Kindles and Nooks, and MP 3/music devices are examples of what can be donated. Staff will process donations and in most cases add the tools to the library collection for patron use. When donated items cannot be integrated into the collection they will be passed to the Friends of the Carson City Library’s Browser’s Bookstore and made available for sale “as is,” or to the Carson City Library Foundation for recycling in support of its technology renewal initiatives.
“It was a terrific offer from Supervisor McKenna a few months ago when he asked me if there was a place in town where he could donate a devise he wasn’t using, but was in perfect working order. I replied, ‘Yes’ the library,” said Carson City Library Director Sena Loyd.
Donations will be accepted throughout normal operating hours starting Monday, November 24th, Monday-Saturday and at the time of drop off staff will issue a receipt. Donors are asked to locate all cords and attachments that accompany donated devises in order to ensure the item can integrate into the collection. Original boxes and instruction manuals are also helpful.
“Supervisor McKenna’s Samsung Galaxy is a great tool, you can connect (to the Internet) on the go. His generosity was the seed that sprouted the donation drive. This is an excellent way to keep digital tools in the library collection so patrons can continue their 21st century learning journey. Devices, platforms, software…all of it…are constantly changing. It’s a lot for anyone to keep up and what better way to explore different types of digital tools than by learning about them at the library and then checking them out (literally) to practice. Growing the collection this way makes perfect sense,” said Loyd.
