Sgt. Daniel L Ackerman-Vietnam Veteran-Empire Cemetery at Carson City, Nevada
Sgt. Daniel Leverne Ackerman was from Carson City, Nev. He served in Vietnam, where he made the ultimate sacrifice in combat service to the United States of America a few weeks after his 21st birthday.
Sgt. Ackerman was born on March 13, 1947, and was killed in action on April 10, 1968. On the Vietnam Memorial Wall his name is located at Panel 49E, Line 7. Sgt. Ackerman was buried at Empire Cemetery, which is just east of Carson City.
His mother's gravesite is located next to his. His gravesite is the most recent one I could locate in the older Empire Cemetery. In the photograph it is nice to see that someone is still taking care of their gravesite with flags, and flowers.
Sgt. Ackerman's listing on the Virtual Vietnam Memorial Wall is here.
Go here for more detail on Sgt. Ackerman's military career and his service in Vietnam.
I was in the 7th grade when Sgt. Ackerman died. I still wondered and worried about what was going on in Vietnam, where it seemed like every week 60 to 80 American soldiers died.
Like most Americans, I thought we were still winning the Vietnam war. So many of these U.S. service people died young, before they had lived much of a life, and their loss is still a real tragedy for so many of their surviving family members, relatives, and friends.
