Partnership Carson City, a local organization that inspires a healthy community by building strong families and successful youth, is honoring those who have lost their life to an overdose with a Facebook live event Thursday, August 27 at 6 p.m. The event coincides with International Overdose Awareness Day.

Heading into Thursday, August 29, 2019 and we're ready and due for the upcoming three-day holiday weekend ahead. Looking around the Carson City area for Thursday there's art showings, a Muscle Powered hike, a Partnership Carson City training and lunch and then a vigil to recognize and prevent opioid overdose and more.

The public is invited to a candlelight vigil Thursday at Bob McFadden Plaza in honor of International Overdose Awareness Day.

“The opioid epidemic is so huge, even in a town of our size,” said Samantha Szoyka, the youth program and outreach coordinator for Partnership Carson City. “As a community, we are starting to talk about it, but people still don’t know what resources are available to them or how they can connect with those resources.”

The vigil, which begins at 7 p.m., will feature a guest speaker and booths distributing information.

The Carson Area Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America will gather to honor those who have given their all and have yet to come home during a POW/MIA Recognition Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds.

I’m usually a lover of sunny days, but right now I say bring on the rain. The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. A fundraiser to help pay for expenses associated with a memorial for Deputy Carl Howell at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. will be held immediately following the May 5 Nevada Law Enforcement Officer Memorial.

Nevada Vietnam War veterans were honored Saturday in Carson City as dozens gathered in Mills Park to observe the Vietnam Veterans Day of Remembrance and hold a welcome home ceremony at the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial.

Frank Reynolds, current president of the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) local chapter 388 in Carson City, opened the ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance and the chapter’s chaplain delivered the invocation.

Each year, the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation (FCCPR, formerly the Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation), in conjunction with the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department, recognizes individuals and groups who contribute to the vitality of the community and Carson City's recreational environment.

At the NDOT Maintenance Worker Memorial Wall in Carson City, there were 23 names on it. Monday, though, the 24th name was added.
"I grieve for the moments of his death," said Susan Arding, mother of Ron Raiche Jr. "I fear for his pain in agony. Please drive safely. Keep people alive."

Sgt. Daniel Leverne Ackerman was from Carson City, Nev. He served in Vietnam, where he made the ultimate sacrifice in combat service to the United States of America a few weeks after his 21st birthday.

Sgt. Ackerman was born on March 13, 1947, and was killed in action on April 10, 1968. On the Vietnam Memorial Wall his name is located at Panel 49E, Line 7. Sgt. Ackerman was buried at Empire Cemetery, which is just east of Carson City.

“Always Lost, A Meditation on War,” the nationally touring humanities exhibition created by WNC students and faculty, opened Monday at the historic Minden Inn, 1594 Esmeralda Ave., and remains through Friday, Sept. 12.

Douglas County is hosting the Western Nevada College “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” arts and humanities exhibition as part of a special Nevada Sesquicentennial tour sponsored by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS). More than 200 veterans from the Vietnam War gathered Saturday at the Carson Nugget to pay tribute to each other, those who died and those who remain missing in action as part of national Vietnam Veterans Day.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Tonkin Gulf Resolution. Many consider the resolution the official start of the Vietnam war, though many Americans were fighting and dying in Vietnam beginning in the mid 1950s. It also marks the 40th anniversary of the withdrawal of combat troops from Vietnam.

Tim Tetz, Director of Public Outreach at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund in Washington D.C. announced Saturday that a search is underway to locate and obtain photographs of those Northern Nevadan’s who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam conflict.

Nevada’s Sesquicentennial is celebrating Veterans Day with statewide events Friday through Monday. Nevada residents and visitors are invited to join the celebration and demonstrate patriotism by honoring those who have fought for Nevada and the Country’s freedoms.

The Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation is accepting nominations of individuals, organizations, and businesses to be recognized for their contributions to Carson City's parks and recreation.

The selected names will be added to the Memorial Wall at the entrance to the Pony Express Pavilion at Mills Park, followed by an awards ceremony there on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 4:30 p.m. The categories are Organization of the Year, Business of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and Volunteer of the Years.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Honor Guard and Chaplain dedicated a new flag pole at the administrative complex on Wednesday. The ceremony kicked off a second presentation where three deputies were awarded the “Life Saving Medal” for assertive medical actions resulting in the saving of a life. Deputy Matt Putzer, John Hitch, and Chris Ramos all received medals for their service. The ceremony was concluded as Deputy Bill Richards was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

“Always Lost: A Meditation on War” has returned home to Carson City and was given full honors Wednesday at the Nevada Legislature.

Western Nevada College’s acclaimed creative writing/photographic exhibition about the costs of war will be on display in the Nevada Legislative Building’s second-floor atrium weekdays through May 3.

Dozens of veterans gathered Saturday at Mills Park in Carson City to pay tribute to fellow war veterans, to recognize the 50th anniversary of the official start of the Vietnam War and to commemorate the 40-year-mark of the end of combat operations, March 29th, 1973.

The gathering, hosted by the Carson City Area Vietnam Veterans Chapter 388, brought together several dozen Northern Nevada veterans of the Vietnam War and other wars for a ceremony, similar to ones held across the county in recognition of National Vietnam Veterans Day.

Mayor presents award to DBA on behalf of Vietnam Vets

Nevada Day festivities continue in Carson City through Sunday, today, with the RSVP Carnival and the Battle Born Celebration at Mills Park, a free symphony concert at the Legislative Mall and Halloween festivities.
The salute to America's military "past, present and future" is the theme of this year's statehood events. Featured at the park is the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall, living history re-enactments, tributes and military honors and static displays. Go here for more information.

The name of Carson City Fire Battalion Chief Richard Chrzanowski, who died of cancer, will be added during ceremonies Saturday to the Nevada State Fire Fighters Memorial wall.
Chrzanowski, known to everyone as “Ski,” was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer the day before Thanksgiving in 2009. He died on New Year's eve some five weeks later with his family by his side.
