Carson City Council of the Navy League to Celebrate Veteran's Day
The Carson City Council of the Navy League of the United States will honor Veterans, past and present, at our November Meeting. We will also pay tribute to our MIA’s and POW’s and celebrate both the Navy and Marine Corps birthdays. Our speaker for the Special Veteran’s Day celebration will be Captain Robert Wiley, Retired, who was the first Master of the USNS Carson City, T-EPF 7.
Captain Wiley hails from the wine country of California's Napa Valley and is a 1980 graduate of the California Maritime Academy. After graduation, Wiley accepted employment with the Military Sealift Command (MSC), where he served as Third Officer aboard USNS Dutton (T-AGS 22).
He held numerous junior officer assignments aboard several MSC ships. Captain Wiley was promoted to Master on June 21, 1990 aboard USNS Neptune (T-ARC 2). As a relief master, he commanded USNS Hassayampa during Operation Desert Shield and USNS Spica (T-AFS 9) during Operation Desert Storm. In July 2000, Captain Wily attended the Naval War College in Newport, RI, graduation in June 2001.
In March 2006, Captain Wiley assumed command of USNS Mercy (T-AH 19), serving as the ship’s master for that hospital ship’s humanitarian deployment to the Far East and again in 2008 for the very first Pacific Partnership deployment.
From February 2012 till November 2013 he served ashore as the Special Assistant to the Director of Government Operated Ships at MSC Headquarters in Norfolk In April 2015, he assumed command of USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) for Operation Continuing Promise 2015.
Captain Wiley’s awards include three Meritorious Civilian Service Awards and two Merchant Marine Expeditionary Medals. He is also a recipient of the US Navy League's 2002 Arthur L. Johnson Award for Inspirational Leadership. Captain Wiley and his wife Pamela currently reside in Carson City, Nev.
The Dinner Meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 14, at Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, 2171 Hwy 50E, Carson City. The social hour is at 5:30 PM followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30 PM. The Navy League of the United States was founded in 1902 and is a civilian organization with more than 50,000 members dedicated to educating American citizens and elected officials about the importance of sea power to U.S national security and supporting the men and women of the sea services and their families.
The Carson City Council sponsors and supports Navy and Marine personnel at Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center near Bridgeport, CA and NAS Fallon, NV, as well as, the Carson High Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Command.
