Northern Nevada Fire Wives host open house, barbecue on Saturday
The Northern Nevada Fire Wives will hold their first fund-raising barbeque from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, at the Carson City Fire Department at 777 South Stewart Street, to raise funds to support firefighters and their families when tragedy strikes them.
The non-profit Northern Nevada Fire Wives was organized earlier this year through the efforts of Renee Pedrini and other local firefighter wives, to assist career, volunteer and seasonal firefighters and their families following an incident in which a firefighter friend of her husband’s was seriously injured, and four other firefighters died during a 5-alarm motel fire in Houston, Texas. The new organization wants to provide support to local fire service personnel and their families in cases of tragic losses or injury, but also wants to extend that support on a national level and to assist the local community during emergencies as resources permit.
Those resources will come through fund raising events such as the barbeque that is being put on in conjunction with the Carson City Fire Department and Warren engine Company No. 1. A combination of a hamburger or cheeseburger with chips and a drink will be sold for $5.00, and a raffle will be held with tickets available at $1.00 each. Activities will include tours of the Warren Engine Co. No. 1 museum that chronicles the fire history of Carson City, activities at a Fire Prevention Education Trailer as well as visits by Sparky the Fire Dog and Smokey Bear.
The Northern Nevada Fire Wives will also hold a Fire Wives Turkey Trot in conjunction with KAIA Fit on Thanksgiving morning. Registration for the 5K run is $30 for adults, $25 for those 18 and younger. Registration can be made on the Northern Nevada Fire Wives Facebook page, or from 5-7 p.m. on November 26 at State Farm Insurance at 810 North Nevada Street in Carson City.
Membership in the Northern Nevada Fire Wives is open to the public with annual dues at $15.00, and donations can be made on the organization’s website at www.nnfirewives.org.
