Kierra Bracken from the Office of Governor Steve Sisolak will preside over the Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month Proclamation Event on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at Summit Estates Senior Living and Memory Care, 222 East Patriot Blvd., Reno. The event begins at 3 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.
Joining Bracken are Nicole Mueller, I&R coordinator at the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) and a representative from the Veterans Association. Speakers include Brian Reedy, diagnosed with young onset Parkinson’s and Desi Navarro, whose mother has Parkinson’s disease, and Dawn Currie, Pham.D., BCPS, BCGP. Representatives from the offices of Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen and Congressman Mark Amodei will attend and present certificate awards.
“Education, advocacy and community support are essential to helping individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s and those family members and caregivers who are on this journey with them,” said Amanda Jenkins, administrator at Summit Estates. “We appreciate those who are doing what they can to make difference in their lives and are proud to host this event with our residents.”
According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, approximately 60,000 people are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease each year. By 2020, it is estimated nearly 1 million people in the U.S. will be living with Parkinson’s. That’s more than the combined number of people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig's disease.
