The Mother Hips, car show, kids triathlon and more: Carson City region in store for eventful weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events and activities around the Carson City region to help the next three days breeze by. On Friday, Muscle Powered will host a morning walk at the Carson City Multi-Use Path at 8 a.m. And there's coin press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum.

Virginia City’s Redgrass Americana Festival runs through Friday and Saturday featuring live music, entertainment and food and beverages. A history talk about the Mormon Station will be held at Mormon Station Park in Genoa from 12 to 12:30 p.m.

Heading into the evening, the Carson Fly Fishing Club hosts its three-day Introductory Fly-Fishing Academy from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The Senior Follies will perform Under the Big Top variety show inside the Carson City Community Center at 7 p.m. Always Patsy Cline kicks off at the Carson Valley Improvement Club Hall in Minden to transition into a jam-packed weekend.

On Saturday, the Capital City Kid’s Triathlon takes place at the Carson City Aquatic Facility. The Flying Pig Indoor Flea Market returns to the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. A geology hike at Kings Canyon Trailhead runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m..

The Carson City Downtown Revival Car Show brings classic rides from all makes and models to 101 N. Carson Street. The fifth annual Sassabration Parade in Carson City with tasty food and dozens of vendors. A history talk about the California Trail takes place at Mormon Station Park from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Live music and spooky history will pack Carson City throughout the night. The Mother Hips headline the Levitt AMP outdoor music series. The Carson City Ghost Walk returns to McFadden Plaza from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

On Sunday, Muscle Powered hosts its Sunday bike ride from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fremont Elementary School. A vintage steam train in Virginia City runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A grigliate pizza class at Sierra Chef in Genoa is available for interested participants. A follow up performance by The Senior Follies keeps the events coming with much more in store!

Friday, July 12

Muscle Powered walk at Carson City Freeway Multi-Use Path. 8 to 9 a.m. at the MAC Facility, 1870 Russell Way. Morning walks are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths. If it rains, snows, air quality is bad because of smoke, or trail conditions are unsafe, meet at the Multi-Purpose Athletic Center (MAC) at 1860 Russell Way. July 12, 8 AM – Carson City Freeway Multi-Use Path. Meet in the Multi-Purpose Athletic Center's (MAC) parking lot, 1860 Russell Way. Nevada political memorabilia, collectibles included in national show and sale. 10 a.m. at the Atlantis Casino Resort in Reno. Attendees at the Largest Political Collectibles Show and Sale in the West will not only see a cross-section of national political memorabilia, but also have an opportunity to see rare political items from Nevada. For the first time, the Nevada Historical Society is collaborating with the American Political Items Collectors for their convention July 12-13 at the Atlantis Casino Resort in Reno. The convention offers attendees the chance to shop from more than 100,000 political campaign mementos including buttons, posters, advertising pinbacks, women’s suffrage, sports, protest and social justice cause items, World War I, World War II and popular culture.

Coin press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 600 N. Carson St. Visitors to the Nevada State Museum can watch the museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1 carry on a mission it started nearly 150 years ago in the very same building. The venerable press ”” which churned out millions of dollars in silver and gold coins during stints at U.S. Mints in Carson City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver between 1870 and 1964. The press demonstrations will take place the last Friday of the month with two-person teams of volunteers not only working the press but sharing its history with museum visitors. The demonstrations will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Vintage steam train in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Virginia and Truckee Depot, 166 F Street. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mills on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing, all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City, where you can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more.

Redgrass Americana Festival in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the Red Dog Saloon, 76 N. C Street. Redgrass 2019 is in its inaugural year featuring shades and roots of Americana. Catch acts at Ruby’s Amphitheater, Red Dog Saloon and Canvas Cafe July 12 and 13. Throughout the weekend hear music ranging from country, roots-rock to bluegrass and Americana. This is an experience you won’t want to miss.

Hike with a ranger this summer at Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort. 11 a.m. The sun is out, the snow is melting and now is the time to get out and enjoy summer on your National Forest lands. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit along with our partner Heavenly Mountain Resort, invites the public to Hike with a Ranger beginning July 12, 2019. Hikes will take place every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 11 a.m. at the top of the Heavenly Gondola. The guided hikes last approximately one hour and continue every weekend through September 8, 2019, weather permitting.

History Talk: The Early Years of Mormon Station. 12 to 12:30 p.m. at Mormon Station Park in Genoa. Join park staff on Friday, July 12th, for a talk on the early settlement and development of Mormon Station, and what life was like for the early settlers that called this place home. This talk will focus on the 1850’s, and discuss how Mormon Station grew from a remote trading station to a bustling community over the span of a few years.

Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St., Carson City. Join us to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must be at least 13 years or older to participate. Weekly Open Mic Night at the Zen Den Stage at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels welcome. Carson Fly Fishing Club hosting introductory Fly-Fishing Academy. 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ormsby Room at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, 911 E. Musser Street. The Carson Fly Fishing Club is hosting an Introductory Fly-Fishing Academy Friday, July 12 in the Ormsby Room at the Sheriff's Office. The purpose of the class is to learn the basic techniques of fly fishing. No experience necessary.

Under the Big Top at the Carson City Community Center. 7 to 8:30 p.m. at 851 E. William Street. Tickets for Under the Big Top, the 2019 circus-themed, multi-generational production of the Senior Follies are now available for show dates July 12-14. Tickets are $10 each may be purchased at the Carson City Senior Center online or at the door an hour before the performance at the Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street, Carson City. Show times are 7 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 13 and 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 14. Children aged four and under are admitted for free.

Always Patsy Cline show in Minden. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the CVIC Hall, 1602 Esmeralda Ave. Always… Patsy Cline is based on the true story of Patsy Cline’s friendship with Louise Seger; her number one fan. Louise narrates the story of how she met Patsy and the friendship that continued throughout Patsy’s short-lived life and career. The show is filled with everyone’s favorite songs sung by Carson Valley’s own; the talented local singer-songwriter Krista Jenkins.

Movies in the Park featuring the Incredibles 2. 8:30 p.m. at Heritage Park, 1447 Courthouse Alley in Gardnerville. Gardnerville’s Movies in the Park kicks off its 14th season on June 21, 2019. Movies start at dusk around 8:30 PM.

Saturday, July 13

Capital City Kid's Triathlon. 7:30 to 11 a.m. at the Carson City Aquatic Facility, 841 N. Roop Street. This race is the perfect introduction to the world of triathlon for children of all ages. The aim of the game is smiles and competition. Swim at Carson City’s indoor Olympic-sized pool, and bike and run in iconic Mills Park. Free training for the triathlon on Saturday, June 29th & July 6th from 8-9 am at the Carson Aquatic Facility. More information about age group distances or event registration is available online.

Flying Pig Indoor Flea Market at Fuji Park. 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall, 601 Old Clear Creek Rd. Come on down to the big building at Fuji Park on July 13-14 and meet some great vendors selling antiques, arts, crafts, jewelry and so much more. Always a fun time at the market. Carson Rifle and Pistol Club Rifle Match. 8 a.m. at the Carson Rifle and Pistol Range. The Carson Rifle and Pistol Club will hold two shooting events on Saturday, July 13th at the Carson Rifle and Pistol Range. The first match will be a NRA High Power Rifle match, followed by a Bullseye Pistol match. The NRA High Power Rifle match is a 100 yard rifle match. The course of fire is 50 shots in four stages, from standing, sitting/kneeling and prone positions, in slow and rapid fire. This match is intended for the AR15 in its various versions (iron sights or scoped, rifle or carbine), but similar type rifles (AR10 or M1A for example) are acceptable as well. This is an NRA approved match and the scores can be reported to the NRA, which is part of obtaining an NRA classification.

Fresh and Bountiful: Carson City Farmers Market returns this Saturday. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. in Carson City. Enjoy fresh-picked produce, local meats, fresh flowers, artisan baked goods, jams, honey, crafts, live music and Carson City’s smiling faces.This week at the market you can enjoy music by Ricky D., stop by the kids' booth to make your own market bag, we have all the supplies for you. Muscle Powered hike set for Davis Creek Park. 9 to 11 a.m. at 3620 N. Carson Street. Second Saturday Easy Hike, Davis Creek park, near Bowers Mansion. Please join Muscle Powered as we hike the Discovery Trail at Davis Creek Regional Park located off of old highway 395 near Bowers Mansion. 25 Davis Creek Road, Washoe Valley, NV. On this hike, we will explore the transition zone between the high desert and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. See first hand the changes in the ecology that surrounds us as we move between the Great Basin and the Sierras. Restrooms are available. Hike distance will be approximately 2 miles, depending on trail conditions. Water and closed-toes shoes are REQUIRED. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles are recommended.

Geology hike at Kings Canyon Trailhead. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Learn about the formation of the Sierra Nevada from Geologist Tom Gray, on this free hike, in one of the most beautiful areas in Carson City! Meet at the trailhead, west end of King St. and be prepared for a moderate elevation gain on this 2 mile loop. Be sure to wear closed-toed shoes, bring water & sun protection. See you there! Carson City Downtown Revival Car Show. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Carson City, 101 N. Carson Street. This show has no class but sure is picky! All makes and models are welcome, numerous trophies will be presented to participants. All proceeds benefit local charities and Veterans Guest House. This event includes music, a poker walk, a scavenger hung and a goodie bag for the first 200 attendees. Mark McLaughlin to speak at Dangberg Home Ranch in Minden. 10 a.m. at 1450 State Route Hwy. 88. Mark McLaughlin is an award-winning, nationally published author, professional speaker and photographer with seven books and more than 750 articles in print. He will be speaking about “Lake Tahoe and the Comstock Era” on Saturday, July 13th. Please bring your own seating for all events. No dogs at events; legitimate service animals only. The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital.

Guided tours of the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

Sassabration parade kicks off in Carson City. 12 to 9 p.m. Come on out and celebrate the 5th Annual Sassabration 2019 fundraiser! The event will kick off with a parade starting at the Brewery Arts Center and ending at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint, Carson Hot Springs and Shoe Tree Brewing Company! 2 Broke Kings will appear in concert at Carson Hot Springs. Saturday Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for 6 weekly sessions or $45 drop ins.

History Talk: Braving the California Trail through Nevada. 1 to 1:30 p.m. at Mormon Station Park. For many emigrants who braved the California Trail in the mid-1800s, the segment through Nevada was the most hated and feared portion of the entire journey. A park interpreter will discuss what made travel through the Great Basin of Nevada so arduous for wagon trains, and will also explore topics such as the forty-mile desert, the Humboldt River and the legend of the Buenaventura River.

Lego club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

Carson Mall Wine Walk returns this Saturday. 2 to 6 p.m. at 1227 S. Carson Street. Come sip and shop at the Carson Mall this Saturday, July 13 from 2 to 6 p.m. Carson Mall Wine Walks are held on the second Saturday of the Month. New walkers pay $10 and returning walkers pay $5. You will receive a wine glass which is yours to keep! Eleven stores will have wine for you to taste while you browse the mall. There will also be a poker walk. Toast of the Canyon Train in Virginia City. 5 to 7 p.m. at the Eastgate Depot, 4650 Eastgate Sliding Rd. Journey into the Carson River Canyon on an intimate experience, perfect for date night. Enjoy white wine and appetizers as you travel on a 45-minute trip south of Carson City’s Eastgate Depot. The ride is filled with scenic views of the Carson River and the canyon walls as they echo the sounds of the train whistle. The experience is complete when the “Iron Horse” steams by the passenger cars to reattach to the train to pull it back up out of the canyon.

Levitt AMP Carson City: The Mother Hips presented by the Change Companies. 7 to 10 p.m. at the Change Companies Outdoor Amphitheater, 449 W. King Street. In 1990, Tim Bluhm and Greg Loiacono of the Mother Hips found themselves living in the same house, teaching one another guitar chords. In 1993, they released their debut album, and twenty-five years later, in 2018, The Mother Hips releases their most ambitions album: “Chorus.” they showed that the longstanding rock band could still easily create new, unconventional, and meaningful music for their listeners. The guitarist and vocalist for the band, Tim Bluhm, explains that making music meaningful is important to him: “I'm trying to make music that has a spiritual aspect…an emotional experience that you might not even know is happening because it's surrounded by a loud rock band.”

Carson City Ghost Walk returns on Saturday. 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the McFadden Plaza, 310 S. Carson St. For the 27th year, the spookiest historical tour of the capital city is returning this Saturday, June 1 with the Carson City Ghost Walk. The Carson City Ghost Walk is a seasonal historical tour of Carson City’s west side, a walking history lesson with a touch of the supernatural. Some of the stops on the tour include the Bliss Mansion, the Ferris Mansion, the Governor’s Mansion, and the Rinckel Mansion.

Saturday Night Star Party at WNC. 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Jack C. Davis Observatory. The Jack C Davis Observatory hosts free star parties on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month year round, starting at 7:30 p.m. (except when there is snow on the roads). The evening starts with a lecture on one of numerous topics and concludes with guided star viewing by one of our astronomers. Mike Thomas lectures 2nd Saturdays and Dr. Tom Herring lectures on 4th Saturdays.

Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. As part of Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday celebration, the Smokey Reading Challenge is underway. Launched this morning at the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records in Carson City, the program is designed to engage children across Nevada in an exciting reading journey to learn about wildfire prevention, forests, and careers in natural resources with Smokey Bear.

The Nevada Jeep Club held their first Washoe Valley Cleanup on Saturday, May 4 and collected more than 450 pounds of trash along Highway 395.

Partnership Carson City has launched “Rediscovering Your Mental Health Series,” a five-week program aimed at promoting mental wellness during Mental Health Awareness Month this May. Each week, participants will have the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques to enhance their mental well-being and foster a healthy community.

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club members continue celebrating the organization’s 127th year with a presentation on the upcoming Jazz and Beyond festival.

At the club’s dinner meeting on Thursday, May 16, Cherie Shipley, a member of the event planning committee, will talk about the annual Jazz and Beyond festival, how it formed, and the impact it has had on the community. Jazz and Beyond is scheduled for August 16 to August 25, 2024.

Members of the Rotary Club of Carson City will learn how its annual Educational Grant has helped local students at the club’s next meeting. Carson School District K-12 Curriculum & Assessment Coordinator Brittany Witter received the club’s Carson City School District’s Professional Development Center Grant last year with the goal of funding the “Literacy and Love of Reading through Social Studies” project.

UPDATE 6 p.m.: Courtesy of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office: On May 3, 2024 at approximately 1430 hours, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies responded along with Central Lyon County, Carson City and Storey County Fire personnel to the area of 34 Newman Ln. for a report of motorhome on fire. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the fire had spread and multiple other abandoned vehicles caught fire as well. No one was hurt or injured during the incident. The incident is currently under investigation, which is being conducted by the Nevada State Fire Marshall’s Division.

UPDATE 2:38 p.m.: Firefighters from Storey are also now responding.

UPDATE 2:33 p.m.: Multiple vehicles on the property are engulfed in flame.

Around 2:15 p.m. a fire was reported at 34 Newman Lane in Mound House.

Firefighters from Carson City and Lyon County are enroute to the scene.

UPDATE 1:20 p.m.: According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, a student reported they saw a weapon. The incident was investigated and there was no weapon found. The lockdown has now been lifted and students are leaving the school.

UPDATE 1:15 p.m.: Update 05-03-24 at 1:15 p.m.
One student has reported an alleged weapon sighting. It has not been corroborated, but school officials and the sheriff’s office are investigating out an abundance of caution.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: The following update was provided by the district:

Carson High School was put on lockdown this afternoon around 12:15 p.m. No person was injured. There is an active situation being investigated in cooperation with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. We will provide more information as it becomes known. The school is secure. Do not go to the school. No entrances will be permitted at time. The district will provide updates every 30 minutes. Expect the next update at 1:15 p.m.

Carson High School is currently on a lockdown as of 12:40 p.m. Friday, but there has been no incident reported according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Carson High School Culinary Arts and Early Childhood Education students competed at the three-day state conference last month for Nevada Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. Carson City’s former Board of Supervisor and business owner Stan Jones was posthumously awarded Thursday the Historic Preservation Award for his long time work for downtown Carson City.

Each year, a Historic Preservation Award is awarded by the Historic Resources Commission to Carson City residents or organizations who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to historic preservation.

The Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is today, Thursday, May 2 at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City. The memorial brings hundreds to the capitol grounds. The ceremony begins at 1 p.m.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrested three for their alleged involvement in business thefts last month on Topsy Lane south of Carson City.

The national issue of suicide — particularly among veterans — touched many people who attended the Walk for Hope on Wednesday morning at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

The new renovations at the Carson City Senior Center opened the opportunity to host art shows to extend enrichment to the senior community. Carson City Senior Center presents “Geographical Divides: Finding Common Ground,” featuring 16 artists who were asked to explore the geographical and cultural differences in Nevada, if such differences truly exist.

Carson City’s Muscle Powered hosts bike month each year in addition to their year-round volunteerism.

More than 48 Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students attended the state conference in Sparks, Nev. this past week. In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. Additionally, three CHS FBLA students took state with first-place finishes and 15 of them qualified for the National Business Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. this coming June.
