The Nevada State Museum, Carson City, will showcase an early 20th century gown on Jan. 20, as well as historic Coin Press No. 1 on Saturday, Jan. 16.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

The Nevada State Museum, Carson City offers a slate of in-person and online programs in January, ranging from online family projects to historical lectures. The offerings fall under four different programs: Family Fun Saturday and the Francis Humphrey Lecture Series, both occurring online, as well as Coin Press No. 1 demonstrations and Curator’s Corner programming, both available in-person at the museum. Events are as follows:

Snakes are on the table at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. Not literally, but they will be the topic of discussion. As always, guests are invited to attend the online meeting.

To honor and raise funds for Nevada’s health care workers, historic Coin Press No. 1 will mint a special medallion from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 19 and 26 at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. in Carson City.

The first of its kind Lake Tahoe Commemorative Coin was minted this month on historic Carson City Mint Press No. 1 and less than 300 of the limited-edition coins are still available for the public, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, said Tuesday.

The Carson City Symphony has completed "The Hank Monk Schottische" project, which organizers undertook because the pandemic has limited the Symphony's usual interactions with each other and the public.

The Nevada State Museum, Carson City, will reopen Wednesday; visitors will be able to learn about pine trees during the Curator’s Corner presentations from 1 to 3 p.m. Additionally, the museum this Saturday will resume its weekly demonstrations of historic Coin Press No. 1, minting a special medallion honoring Nevada’s health care heroes.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. A Thanksgiving Turkey Drop for families in need will be held Friday at Max Casino. The holiday movie premieres of “Feliz NaviDAD” and “Once Upon A Main Street” on Saturday will feature different venues in Carson City. The fourth annual Carson Valley Turkey Trot begins Friday and will be held virtually throughout the month of November. The Nevada State Museum, Carson City, raised $4,625 for the COVID-19 Relief Fund during its Oct. 30 minting of special medallions on historic Coin Press No. 1, and will continue fundraising efforts through Dec. 31, 2020.

CARSON CITY — Nevada is home to 23 species of bats, some of which will be featured Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. in Carson City.

The results are in. Students laughed at them because they had to dress differently, today, but they laughed at the students, too, because they were all dressed the same.

Heading into the final weekend of October, Halloween and Nevada Day events will keep revelers busy through Sunday making for a jam packed weekend of fun for families and grownups around the Carson City region.

For the second year, Nevada Day has its own brew to call its own, made at Carson City's own Shoe Tree Brewing Company.

The annual Nevada Day Chili feed at the Carson Nugget and a historic east-side tour of Carson City are among two new events have been added to this weekend's roster of Nevada Day festivities.

With Nevada Day festivities rolling this week without the coveted official parade along Carson Street, some have noted on social media their intention to rally their own independent parades.

While not illegal or encouraged, the Carson City Sheriff's Office is staffed up to make sure that whoever chooses to do anything non-sanctioned, including independent parading on Carson Street, that whatever they choose to do is done without breaking the law.

The Nevada Day Golf Tournament in remembrance of Mayor Bob Crowell will be held at Silver Oak Ranch Golf Course on Saturday. Dozens of fundraisers, including the Benson’s Feed 4 Paws 4-H group, will be scattered throughout the Carson City and Gardnerville areas. To kick off our Dia de los Muertos celebration this year I will lead a craft making Facebook Live event at 10 a.m. Saturday as part of the Nevada State Museum Family Fun Saturday. We will be making tissue paper flowers that are used to decorate Dia de los Muertos Altars.

CARSON CITY — Learn about the snakes of northwestern Nevada this Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. in Carson City. George Baumgardner, curator of natural history, will offer brief demonstrations starting at 1 p.m. and repeated until 3 p.m. for visitors passing through the museum’s demonstration gallery.

CARSON CITY — A Mescalero Apache basket with a provenance to Native American leader Goyahkla, also known as Geronimo, will be discussed from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23 at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City.

Carson City Kiwanis is hosting its seventh annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday with several activities for all to enjoy. The meaning and symbolism of objects found on a traditional Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) altar will be presented from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Nevada State Museum, Carson City. Museum Curator of Education Mina Stafford will deliver the program on this uniquely Mexican holiday and how it has evolved over time. Also at the event, the museum will announce plans for this year’s Dia de Los Muertos celebration.

Partnership Carson City will team up for a statewide suicide prevention virtual walk this Saturday. The Nevada Day Committee would like to officially announce that, due to current conditions, the traditional Nevada Day Celebration will have a new look this year.

Featured speakers at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon will be two Nevada journalists who have written extensively about how Nevada responded to the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918-1919: Bob Conrad in Reno and Bob Stoldal in Las Vegas.
