February is coming to a close, and we’ve got the chance at a nice weekend. Explore a new trail with Muscle Powered as they take on the Fay-Luther Trail south of Genoa. If you’re in a theater kind of mood, catch the Proscenium Players’ production of ‘Love Letters.’ See what the Nevada Artists Association has been up to during their Grand Re-opening and Winter Art Show Reception this afternoon. Read on and see what options the weekend brings.

  • Muscle Powered: Winter Hike along Fay-Luther Trail in Genoa – To Carpool, meet shortly before 9am (to depart at 9am) at the north end of the Target parking lot (corner of 395 and Jacks Valley Road) to carpool down Jacks Valley Road to the trailhead which is several miles south of Genoa (Hike begins 9:30am – meet at the Trailhead parking lot; relatively easy 5 mile intermediate hike on sandy/dirt trails although there is some uphill climbing, some rocky trail sections, and a short trail area with a grade as steep as 12%; Closed-toed shoes, snacks and water are required. friendly dogs on leashes are welcome and poles are recommended; We will cancel by 8:30am if there is significant inclement weather. The Carson City Symphony begins their season in the Community Center Theater with their concert, Crosscurrents. The Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is today, Thursday, May 2 at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City. The memorial, which brings hundreds to the capitol grounds. The service begins at 1 p.m.

Carson City’s Muscle Powered hosts bike month each year in addition to their year-round volunteerism.

More than 48 Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students attended the state conference in Sparks, Nev. this past week. In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. Additionally, three CHS FBLA students took state with first-place finishes and 15 of them qualified for the National Business Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. this coming June.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

In collaboration with Chartwells, the Carson City School District foodservice partner, Culinary Arts students from Ms. Tammy Borreman’s class at Carson Middle School competed in a “Discovery Kitchen Cook Off.” Similar to a mini version of the Food Network’s Iron Chef, the timed cooking competition featured teams of three students who prepared succulent dishes for a judging panel.

Shoe Tree Brewing, with locations in Carson City and Minden, was recently awarded a Silver Award in the 2024 World Beer Cup, the most prestigious beer competition in the world.

Western Nevada College is presenting traditional commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2024 on May 20 in Carson City and May 23 in Fallon.
