In a continuing series of profiles, Soroptimist International of Carson City welcomes the community join us in congratulating 2021 “Women Helping Women” honoree Katie Leao Geiser, who is among eight Carson City area women to be honored at our Feb. 18 virtual event.

Undoubtedly a year like no other, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada’s Mike Tice Charity Weekend was one many events cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Nevada Humanities has announced the book selections for its statewide 2021 Nevada Reads program. Nevada Reads will feature two memoirs — Miracle Country: A Memoir by Kendra Atleework, and World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil.

Soroptimist International of Carson City is pleased to announce our “Women Helping Women” Honorees to be recognized for their dedication to improving the lives of women or girls in our community, at our Virtual “Celebrating Women Helping Women” Recognition Event, via Zoom, on February 18, 2021 from 6:30 pm to 8 pm.

Soroptimist International of Carson City is seeking nominations for its annual Ruby Award. The Soroptimist Ruby Award honors women who, through their professional or personal efforts, are making a difference in the lives of women or girls in the areas of health, education, and economic and social development and inspires and encourages other women.

This week's Senator Square features guest writers Ananda Campbell and Bridget Gordon-Johnson who explain Monday homeroom academic strategies. Campbell is a CHS Library Media Specialist and Carson City School District Library Coordinator. Gordon is a CHS counselor. This is their report:

Many in Carson City do everything they can to help the less fortunate, and those opportunities never cease being opportunities. With this in mind, the holidays are here, the semester at Carson High School is almost over, Christmas vacation, also known as winter break, begins Dec. 19, and there is another opportunity to be generous for those who have plenty.

Pastor Tim Plummer, Fellowship of Christian Athletes Missionary Area Director, has once again brought Christmas trees to Carson City to support FCA. Christmas is fast approaching, and most agree it is the best time of the year. The holidays can be a difficult time for many, but it does not have to be this way.

Katie Leao, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, will be the guest speaker at this week’s Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. The virtual meeting takes place on Tuesday, December 1, at 12:30 via ZOOM.

Gov. Steve Sisolak announced on Sunday that he is lowering occupancy limits and once again reducing the size of allowed gatherings as COVID-19 continues to spread like wildfire across the state, setting records day after day for new reported cases.

Carson High School's NJROTC Drill and Color Guard team competed in their first ever ‘virtual’ drill competition hosted by University of North Carolina ROTC program. The various teams’ performances were captured on video and sent to the University for judging.

The results are in. Students laughed at them because they had to dress differently, today, but they laughed at the students, too, because they were all dressed the same.

While the seat for Ward 2 will be filled following the election on Nov. 4, another seat is open and will be filled by appointment.

The seat for Ward 3 is currently held by Supervisor Lori Bagwell, who will be vacating now that she has been elected Carson City’s mayor.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region. The Dayton Chamber’s 27th annual “Making A Difference” Golf Tournament arrives Friday. Carson City Kiwanis is hosting its seventh annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday with several activities for all to enjoy. Students at Western Nevada College were captivated by a very special visitor on Wednesday morning on its Carson City campus. None other than Steve Sisolak, the 30th governor of Nevada, spent part of his busy morning passionately telling students about the respect he has for them and the sacrifices they are making to attend college.

With the 2020-21 school year in full swing, private schools in the Carson City area are adjusting to new COVID-19 health and safety procedures.

Miles Construction, a diversified northern Nevada general contractor, presented Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada with a $5,000 check in support of the Luau 2020 event and fundraiser, being held virtually this Saturday, Sept. 12.

United Federal Credit Union is excited to announce a new two-year partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada. As part of the partnership, United donated $4,000 to the Club and has pledged to donate another $4,000 in 2021.

Tens of thousands of Nevada small businesses and organizations — from casinos and law firms to churches and even strip clubs — received at least $3.1 billion through the Paycheck Protection Program stimulus package, according to a massive disclosure made by the federal government.

Golf was invented or discovered, whichever you like, in Scotland in the mid-1400's, and became hugely popular almost overnight. Golf in Scotland in 1460 was so popular that one could not walk to the post office without getting hit by a golf ball.

The Dayton Farmers Market opened for the 2020 season on June 11. The market will take place every Thursday this summer from 3 to 6 p.m. at 60 Second Avenue and Highway 50, across from Pizza Factory. Market-goers will find seasonal, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, honey, and more from our region’s farmers.

The Carson City Host Lions will hold an Installation Dinner on Wednesday, June 24 beginning with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. at the Carson City Plaza Events Center, with dinner following at 6 p.m. Region Chair Adam Hopkins from the Reno Cigar Lions Club will perform the installation ceremony. Summer is in full swing, and recreational activities around Carson City are starting to return in the near future.

From the Carson City Library’s 2020 Learning Challenge, to archery classes at the Clear Creek Bowman Archery Camp, there are several ways for youth to get outside and enjoy the Silver State.

CARSON CITY — Through a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Nevada will be deploying 35 crisis counselors statewide to support Nevadans coping with the effects of COVID-19. The program will focus on a population health approach that encourages healthy coping and active management of stressors, building resiliency and fostering compassion.

UPDATE: Late Tuesday afternoon it was announced that Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak canceled a planned press conference. He will instead address Nevadans in a videotaped message. In a news release from the Governor's Office it noted that late last week Gov. Sisolak had visited a work place where an employee — who was not in the building at the time — has since reported testing positive for COVID-19. The Governor’s Office learned of the positive test result on Tuesday.

Sena is best known for her years of exemplary service as Carson City's library director, in recognition of which she was named 2017 Nevada Librarian of the Year.
