The Salvation Army is open and ready to serve. All Salvation Army Officers in the Western Territory have been placed on Emergency Disaster Status to better serve our communities in this time of crisis.

Carson City officials are continuously monitoring the level of risk of COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) to the community. In close coordination with Carson City Health and Human Services, the City Manager’s Office along with City departments in an abundance of caution are coordinating the closure of some offices to take additional measures to slow the spread of respiratory viruses. Carson High School senior and Partnership Carson City Community Prevention Coordinator Cruz Bulmer, 19, is spreading the word about the Deterra Drug Deactivation System.

Ronald Bratsch, a Carson City Veteran, Security Manager and longtime fiscal conservative is announcing his candidacy for Carson City Supervisor Ward 4.

The Nevada Northern Regional Behavioral Health Policy Board elected Taylor Allison, executive director of Partnership Douglas County, as their new chair on Feb. 26.

“Our board is comprised of 13 passionate individuals focusing on a common goal,” Allison said. “Together, we can move the needle and help improve the lives of patients and families in Northern Nevada.”

Fourteen area middle and high school students were awarded cash prizes for their entries into the Fleet Reserve Association Branch (FRA) No. 137 Annual Essay-writing contest on Feb. 29 at a luncheon sponsored by the branch Auxiliary in Carson City, held in their honor.

“We did our free clinic at the Community Center, and what a turnout we had; around 100 participants showed up, we had a ton of fun, and we even had high school varsity players help coach the clinic as well” said Carson High School Varsity Basketball coach Jordan Glover.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. The monthly Downtown Carson City Wine Walk takes place Saturday followed by a performance from Tom Petty and Rod Stewart tribute bands during The Do Drop In’s “A Face in the Crowd” homeless fundraiser at Fuji Park. St. Teresa School will host its 17th annual Crab Feed Fundraiser. Combined with comedy at the Carson Nugget and Brewery Arts Center, the Carson City region is in store for a busy weekend. The thaw continues around the capital city as we head into Tuesday with highs expected in the mid-50s. Events lined up feature morning and evening walks hosted by Muscle Powered, Carson City TRIAD will give a presentation at the senior center on scams targeting older adults. Also on tap, the Carson City Classic Cinema Club presents a Jimmy Stewart favorite "You Can't Take it With You" at the BAC; if you love music, there's Big-Band Jazz X2 at the Carson City Community Center, and you can join Carson Now as it celebrates its 10th anniversary at Living the Good Life.

It's "big-band jazz times two" when the Mile High Jazz Band and Carson Middle School’s Royal Blue Jazz Band present the 17th annual combined Jazz Extravaganza concert, on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, at 7 p.m., in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street, Carson City.

Heading into the backend of the work week, events lined up Thursday include day 1 of the 7th annual International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center, a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a free information session on the legal and financial aspects of long-term care hosted by Carson Tahoe Care Center, the Carson City GOP will host a meeting to discuss precinct organization, plus trivia night at Bella Vita Bistro, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and a lecture on women’s suffrage movement history in Nevada. The Carson City Department of Arts & Culture, in partnership with the Carson City Clerk-Recorder’s Office, proudly announced its first ‘I Voted’ sticker design competition.

The first European to see America, so far as we know, was a Norseman named Barney, somewhere around A.D. 986. Barney was wading ashore, holding his shoes, when he encountered some Native Americans who were not in a good humor that particular morning, and they gave Barney the bum's rush. So he absquatulated (cut stick) in his dinghy, and rowed like crazy for home, anywhere but America.

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will present the first of four “LatinXpressions” concerts on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 4 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street in Carson City. The concert highlights music and dance of Latin America as well as classical compositions.

A special joint meeting between the Carson City School District Board of Trustees and the Carson City Board of Supervisors will be held on Thursday, Feb. 20 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

The Carson City School District will host two showings of a 60-minute documentary titled "Screenagers Next Chapter — Uncovering Skills for Stress Resilience" Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Bob Boldrick Theatre in the Carson City Community Center. The two showings, beginning at 5:30 and 7:00 p.m., will be free and open to the public. Parents are encouraged to bring their children.

Heading into Monday, Presidents' Day, we're looking at sunny skies and a high near 55. Being a federal holiday, local, state and federal offices are closed, as are schools and banks. Activities include a meeting of Carson City AGLOW International at the Children's Museum, a campaign rally featuring presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, a meeting of the Carson City Democrats focusing on Saturday's Nevada caucus, fitness events, West Coast swing dance lessons at Carson Lanes and more.

Ever spend some time watching high school students having fun? They do it so naturally. There is no lack of excitement happening at Carson High School, and one of the more amazing aspects of this high school is everyone is invited to attend every event.

This past weekend, Youth Theatre Carson City’s Showstoppers show choir traveled to Southern California to compete in the Musical Theatre Competitions of America 2020, a national competition with 35 teams representing 19 states and 3 countries, and brought home two major awards: 2nd place Advanced/Open Musical Revue and 3rd place Advanced/Open Ensemble Performance.

Students from Wild Horse Children's Theater in Carson City won a Freddie G Excellence in Music national theater award and earned recognition at the 2020 Junior Theater Festival West, which happened Feb. 7-9, 2020 at Wells Fargo Pavilion.

Heading into Thursday and we're looking at plenty of sunshine with a daytime high near 60. Happenings around the capital city include a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, Valentine-themed activities at Carson Mall, a Muscle Powered hike at Clear Creek Trail, Pilates at the Brewery Arts Center, the second of three Carson City school zone modification meetings and more.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, we can expect sunny skies and continued highs in the mid-50s. Midweek events include a Dayton chamber breakfast with the founder of the Desert Pigs cleanup nonprofit group. Plus there's the first of 5 days of Valentine-themed festivities that begins at Carson Mall; an open house at Bethlehem Lutheran School, a CASA information hour, a Carson City School District meeting regarding proposed middle school zone modification. Plus there's a yoga class, Salsa dancing at Yaple's Ballroom, country and pop dancing at Carson Lanes, a safety workshop for women and more.

A Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is a trained volunteer appointed by a judge to speak up for the best interests of children in foster care. CASA Volunteers are Everyday Heroes who come from all walks of life and serve as the eyes and ears of the Court.

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties holds a breakfast meeting on the second Thursday of each month at 9am in various locations in Storey and Lyon counties.
