My gardening clothes stink and I’m a happy woman! I’ve been pruning a Rhus trilobata, commonly called skunkbush sumac. Its name tells the story. I should have left my malodorous garments outside rather than carrying that pungent scent into the house. Oh well, I don’t care. I’m happy because I’m pruning. The second and more powerful of two winter storms will move through the Sierra and western Nevada on Sunday into Monday, bringing gusty winds, heavy mountain snow, valley rain with 2 to 4 inches of snow possible on the valley floors.

A pair of storms are on tap for the Sierra and Carson City region this weekend that may result in travel disruptions in the mountains, aviation impacts and recreational hazards, according to the National Weather Service.

The University of Nevada, Reno, in consultation with student leadership, will postpone its May commencement and has determined that Spring 2020 graduates will have the choice to celebrate their achievements coinciding with, but be separate from, either the December 2020 graduation ceremonies or Spring 2021 ceremonies.

Each season brings its joys and its challenges. So far this morning around the capital city we've seen snow, then sunshine and then light snowfall again. Winter weather continued overnight in the Sierra and into the valley floors, causing headaches for the likes of not only Tuesday morning commuters trying to maneuver the roads, but big rig freight haulers who are stuck on Interstate 80 near the Nevada state line due to heavy snow.

Some light snow accumulation is possible along the valley floors later Monday evening through Tuesday morning, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory for the Reno, Virginia City, Carson City and Carson Valley areas. The greater Lake Tahoe area is also under a winter weather advisory with 6 to 12 inches of snow possible above 7,000 feet.

A winter storm will continue to push through the region Sunday into Monday, bringing several feet of snow to the Sierra with rain and a few inches of snow around Carson City and the valley floors.

Also on tap, the Carson City Classic Cinema Club presents a Jimmy Stewart favorite "You Can't Take it With You" at the BAC; if you love music, there's Big-Band Jazz X2 at the Carson City Community Center, and you can join Carson Now as it celebrates its 10th anniversary at Living the Good Life.

On February 28, NV Energy filed its Natural Disaster Protection Plan with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada per Senate Bill 329, that outlines how the company plans to help protect the public from the impacts of natural disasters on its electric infrastructure that have been experienced in other Western states.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Sunday for the Carson City area and valley floors and noon for Lake Tahoe and surroundings areas in the Sierra, according to the National Weather Service. With the return of snow, many chain restrictions are in place Sunday morning across the Sierra and western Nevada.
