Winter Weather Advisory through Tuesday morning, light snow could affect morning commute
Some light snow accumulation is possible along the valley floors later Monday evening through Tuesday morning, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory for the Reno, Virginia City, Carson City and Carson Valley areas. The greater Lake Tahoe area is also under a winter weather advisory with 6 to 12 inches of snow possible above 7,000 feet.
The advisory is in effect from 8 p.m. Monday to 11 a.m. Tuesday. The weather service says snow down to the valley floors is expected. Total snow accumulations of zero to 1 inch is possible on valley floors, 1 to 3 inches for areas at and above 5,000 feet including Reno North Valleys and Carson City foothills, and 3 to 5 inches for Virginia City.
The weather service says precipitation will begin as a rain-snow mix on valley floors before turning to all snow later this evening. Forecasters advise travel could be very difficult and road conditions could become difficult during the Tuesday morning commute.
Meanwhile, the advisory also extends to the greater Lake Tahoe Basin, which had been under a Winter Storm Warning. That was downgraded as snowfall rates are expected to be much lower than in previous days.
For Tahoe and the Sierra, additional snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches for Truckee and Lake Tahoe areas, with 6 to 12 inches for passes and areas above 7,000 feet. Peak snowfall rates overnight Monday will like make for hazardous road conditions through Tuesday morning.
