Carson City area weather: Storm slams Sierra, more on the way including valley rain and snow
A winter storm will continue to push through the region Sunday into Monday, bringing several feet of snow to the Sierra with rain and a few inches of snow around Carson City and the valley floors.
With the arrival, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Sierra and Lake Tahoe and a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. Monday for the valley floors. Travel is not encouraged in the Sierra. Chains and snow tires are required with snow sticking on the roadways at around 5,000 feet.
For the Sierra, snow totals could range from 1 to 3 feet, with 3 to 5 feet above 7,000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph with ridge gusts up to 90 mph.
Total snow accumulations around Reno, Carson City, Dayton and, Carson Valley is to around 2 inches possible through Sunday except 2 to 5 inches above 5,000 feet, according to the National Weather Service. Additional accumulation Sunday night into Monday morning of up to 2 inches with 2 to 4 inches above 5000 feet is anticipated, with local wind gusts up to 35 mph.
Winds gusting as high as 35 mph with some blowing and drifting snow in the foothills and Virginia Highlands during the overnight periods. Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning commute.

Even light snowfall causes major travel delays, especially during periods of high traffic volume. Be sure to allow extra time to reach your destination. Leave extra space between vehicles since it takes longer to stop on slick roadways.
