I’ve always loved Tuesdays and today is a good representation of what the day can offer. National Pancake Day at IHOP means a free short stack; but they are hoping you’ll donate to the Children’s Miracle Network. Jazz and Poetry take over Comma Coffee this evening; the Mile High Jazz Band can be found there every second Tuesday all year long. Get your fro-yo fix at Yogurt Beach and help raise funds for the annual Relay for Life fundraiser. A great panel of women will be at the Dayton Community Center this evening to share their experiences growing up on the Comstock.

In like a lion, out like a lamb. March has arrived, and it brings the promise of more snow for the mountains. Not today, though, so embrace the sunny spring day that we have. Put on your cowboy boots and head to Carson Lanes for some line dancing. Square dancing in Genoa is free your first time; dress casual and go do-si-do. The Performance Hall at the Brewery Arts Center is where you’ll find the Carson City Classic Cinema Club’s viewing of Meet John Doe with Gary Cooper.

Capital Nevada Toastmasters is holding its weekly meeting Tuesday, March 1 at Grandma Hattie’s restaurant.

Speaking this week are Russ Steele, Jeni Chavez and Maureen Hopkins. You’ll hear a joke by Tammy Lancaster and learn the Word of the Day from Carmela Porcella. We’ve all felt the occasional urge to ride off into the sunset, but it was those Pony Express boys that actually did it. Learn about their history from the Pony Express Association at Red’s Old 395. The weekly walk, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department, heads to the new MAC center in case of wet weather. A lot of people will tell you it’s never a good idea to play with fire, but for the folks of Controlled Burn, fire can be art. A new community practice group is starting up at A to Zen and everyone is welcome to come learn what it takes to dance with fire. The Carson City Classical Cinema Club is growing and has moved its monthly movie viewings to the Black Box Theater at the Brewery Arts Center. If you aren’t a member yet, it is just five dollars to enjoy Prince and the Pauper tonight.

The Carson Library offers some great activities for the kids and Craft Tuesday today is one of them. While you’re there, head across the street to Browser’s Corner Book Store to check out the holiday offerings at their craft fair. ‘Break a leg’ to the talented students of Carson High Musical Theater: their Winter Ensemble Concert is at the Community Center tonight. Jazz and poetry return to Comma Coffee: the monthly performance of the Mile High Jazz Band begins at 7:30 p.m.

Department on this morning’s Easy Walk at Silver Saddle Ranch. Go dancing tonight and take your pick of line dancing at Carson Lanes or beginning swing dance at El Charro’s. Dancers can choose from country line dance at Carson Lanes or swing dance at El Charro Avita. Capital Eats inside of Westside Pour House just started a Tuesday night Basque dinner, but you’ll want to call for reservations and information on this week’s menu. Get your wing fix Firkin and Fox: it’s all you can eat chicken wings today. Save room for dessert, though, National Ice Cream Cone Day is worth celebrating.

The long weekend is over, and we won’t have another three day weekend until Nevada Day. Weather is heating back up, so at least it won’t feel like autumn, just yet. If you want to break out of your routine, try swing dancing. Beginners lessons are taught on Tuesdays at El Charro Avita. If country is more your thing, Carson Lanes offers lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Jazz and Poetry at Comma Coffee with the Mile High Jazz Band is sure to be a good time.

Several days ago, my dad and I had a conversation. Our conversation started like most other people start theirs. He expressed his thoughts and concerns and I parried back with mine. At the end of the day we were both frustrated with the whole conversation. It was a stalemate. He didn’t understand me and I didn’t understand him. Which seems very familiar with some of the conversations I’ve had with my wife.

How can two people in the same room, speaking the same language, not understand each other? How many conversations like that, have you had?

Jim Klipp of Kit Carson Toastmasters in Carson City took top honors at both the International Speech Contest and the Table Topics Contest at the Area Level on March 8.

The International Speech Contests challenges each contestant to present their best five to seven minute speech. Each of the local clubs may select a representative to compete with the winner advancing to the next level. The finals will be held this year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Capital Nevada Toastmasters is holding a “Talk Turkey” membership drive now thru Nov. 19. Any guest who attends the club meeting (Tuesdays, 12:05 -1:00 p.m. backroom at Grandma Hattie’s Restaurant) will receive a raffle ticket to receive a $30 gift certificate from Raleys. The raffle drawing will be held during the Toastmaster’s meeting on Nov. 19. Need not be present to win. Learn to communicate well and earn a turkey at the same time!

The best speakers in the Carson City area will be chosen Saturday September 18, when three local Toastmasters clubs conduct the annual Area 22, Division B, District 39 speech contest.

The event will be conducted at 1301 Old Hot Springs Road, beginning at 10:00am, and the public is invited. The winner will be chosen from among 6 contestants for the Table Topics contest and 6 for the Humorous Speech contest. The winners of these contests will go on and compete in the Division B contest in Reno on October the 2nd.
