Firefighters called to brushfire near Carson City landfill

UPDATE: A reader, Sergio Nungaray, sent in the video below of the fire.

As of 6:52 p.m. units from the Sheriff’s Office were called to handle traffic in the area of Flint and Rifle Range road. The entry gates have been barred from civilian entry while the fire is contained.

Around 6:30 p.m. Friday evening, firefighters were called to a reported brushfire near the landfill.

Black smoke could be seen rising from the area, as captured in a photograph taken by reader Tim Foraker.

Carson City deputies arrest eight people Thursday, ranging from drug possession to semi-truck hit and run

A 37-year-old Auburn, Calif. man and a 45-year-old Garden Valley, Calif. woman were arrested in the area of Roop and College early Friday morning for suspicion of possessing drugs, drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license, and driving with suspended registration.

UPDATE 5:25PM: Carson City Fire Department is on scene at a vegetation fire on Sierra Vista Lane. The fire is contained and no structures damaged, according to Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon. The fire is estimated at 2 acres. Mutual aid was provided by East Fork Fire and Truckee Meadows Fire, they are covering the city while firefighters are battling the blaze. The Carson City Sheriff's Office has closed Sierra Vista at Pinion Hills.

Carson City sheriff's officers make drug possession, DUI arrests

A 31-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday in the 2700 block of Sherman Lane for suspicion of possession of methamphetamine, a felony, and five misdemeanor offenses.

Carson City Fire Department called to brush fire in the Prison Hill area

UPDATE 2PM: The Prison Hill fire has been knocked down. Firefighters are now mopping up. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 1:23PM: Multiple fire crews are on scene working the Prison Hill Fire in southeast Carson City. From the command center it appears the smoke is not as heavy as it was earlier. No word yet on size or containment. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 1PM: A U.S. Forest Service brush unit has also been requested and a helicopter from Minden has also arrived. No word yet as to containment or if any structures are threatened.

UPDATE 12:39PM: At least five brush units from Carson City have been called as well as a brush unit from East Fork Fire Protection District, a brush unit from Central Lyon County Fire and a helicopter. The fire continues to put up a dense amount of smoke.

Could the Camp Fire happen here? Carson City Fire Chief talks fire prevention

Fire season is upon us, and while the high temperatures may have come a little late this year, the wet winter and cool temperatures also created a perfect growing situation for fast acting fuels such as cheat grass.

Last year, our community watched with sadness and horror at the Camp Fire and Butte Fire that destroyed our western neighbor communities in California. Those fires, it has now been revealed, were caused by PG&E power lines combined with quick acting, dry fuels.

The question we've wondered is "can this tragedy happen here?" Especially after last fire season, with a number of local fires being related in some way to NV Energy power lines.

A 28-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Sunday for misdemeanor suspicion of domestic battery. A man involved in the altercation was also arrested for two outstanding warrants, a sheriff's deputy report said.
