Dayton 5K Race Results Announced

Dayton’s first Healthy Communities Coalition 5K Walk/Run on May 14 attracted 50 contestants, plus 20 volunteers from Stand Tall and Dayton Task Force. The 5K fundraiser for Stand Tall’s youth leadership teams and Dayton Resource Bank resulted in $811 for the two local youth programs.

The event was a fun way for the community to exercise and to join together for two good causes. Organizers Lavurne Jeffreys and Star Erickson said they look forward to making this an annual event.

Carson City authorities look for origin of possible shots fired in neighborhood

Carson City authorities combed the areas of Fifth and Harbin Street early this morning after several calls came in reporting multiple gunshots fired.

At least six calls came into Carson City dispatch beginning at 1:38 a.m. from residents reporting several shots fired in their neighborhood. A search of the area began immediately and has, thus far, turned up nothing, reports Sgt. Brian Humphrey.

Virginia City school wins 'Hey Nevada, Wash Your Hands!' logo contest

The Nevada State Health Division in Carson City announced Hugh Gallagher Elementary School in Virginia City as the winner of a logo contest for its statewide hand washing campaign, “Hey Nevada, Wash Your Hands!”

The winning logo will serve as part of the campaign’s identity, and will be incorporated into various campaign media. The second place entry was a tie between Yerington Elementary School and L.S. Bruner Elementary in North Las Vegas.

Runners Help Raise Money for Dayton Children

With 34 people turning out for a good cause, the Dayton Resource Bank raised more than $1,100 during its 5K Run on Oct. 23. One hundred percent of the funds directly benefit Dayton area school children.

Among the participants were Dayton Elementary School Principal Cory Sandburg, Healthy Communities Coalition director Christy McGill, and the entire Freshman Volleyball team of Dayton High School.

Nevada Day kicks off this morning with annual the Nevada Day Parade, with the theme being "100 Years of Aviation" to go along with the Silver State’s admission to the Union in 1864.

Retired Lt. Col. Dick Rutan of the U.S. Air Force serves as Grand Marshal for today's celebration. He was picked to coincide with the theme, which marks a history-making flight of daredevil pilot William Ivy Baldwin west of Carson City, where he soared to 4,675 feet, the highest ever at that time.
 

Area near Carson City protected wetlands to get trails and sidewalks

Construction near the intersection of Northridge Drive and Russell Way in Carson City prompted a Carson Now reader to ask what kind of work is being done in the area.

The reader writes: "What is going on with the protected wetlands area north of Northridge Street between the freeway to the east and behind the houses on Eastridge to the west? It looks like they are trying to fill it in with dirt with the equipment that arrived this morning. All public access was closed off as of Monday. Please investigate and report."
