Dayton 5K Race Results Announced

Dayton’s first Healthy Communities Coalition 5K Walk/Run on May 14 attracted 50 contestants, plus 20 volunteers from Stand Tall and Dayton Task Force. The 5K fundraiser for Stand Tall’s youth leadership teams and Dayton Resource Bank resulted in $811 for the two local youth programs.

The event was a fun way for the community to exercise and to join together for two good causes. Organizers Lavurne Jeffreys and Star Erickson said they look forward to making this an annual event.

What is Dayton Resource Bank?
The Resource Bank is a project of Dayton Task Force that accepts 3rd party referrals about student needs.

Ministers, club leaders, school secretaries, teachers, bus drivers, counselors, administrators, coaches, and nurses who notice that a family is unable to pay for any item related to succeeding in school or participating in extracurricular clubs, field trips, etc., can contact the Dayton Task Force at 246-7550. The service does not violate student privacy, because there is no need to share the name of the child, only the need. Typical needs include fees for gym, band, or choir uniforms, fees for field trips or for classes, such as rental fees for musical instruments.

How Do I Request Help for a Student?
To apply for help from the Task Force's Resource Bank, simply call and describe the need and either the Resource Bank funds will be used to purchase the needed items or pay the required fee in question, or the task force leader will connect you to other groups that can fill the student's need.

What are Stand Tall youth leadership teams? These teams promote teen leadership skills and community wellness and prevent alcohol, tobacco and other drug use and are funded through Healthy Communities Coalition. Stand Tall teams exist in most high schools in Lyon and Storey.

The teams lead a number of wellness and prevention campaigns in the schools and their communities throughout the school year, such as the recent alcohol abuse prevention assemblies and the “Every 15 Minutes” event at Dayton High. The teens also participate in service projects such as coat and food drives every year. The regional coordinator is Lavurne Jeffreys, who can be reached at (775) 246-7550.

Generous Prizes Donated by Area Businesses:
There were some top notch prizes for the 5K from generous area businesses, including The El Dorado Hotel Casino, the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, Dayton Pizza Factory, Gold Dust West Casino, Wild Island Family Adventure Park, Boomtown, Bully’s Sports Bar & Grill, Eagle Valley Golf, Empire Ranch Golf, Wild Creek Golf Course, Star Erickson, and Mary Kay Gift Bags from Kathy Arnote. The winners were surprised by the dollar value of the prizes. One said, “I run in races in San Francisco and all over the region, and I rarely see prizes of this quality for 5K Races.”

Prizes were awarded to the first three winners, including categories for male and female adults and youths.  The race results and pictures are also posted on the Healthy Communities Coalition Facebook page and on www.healthycomm.org
