Runners Help Raise Money for Dayton Children
With 34 people turning out for a good cause, the Dayton Resource Bank raised more than $1,100 during its 5K Run on Oct. 23. One hundred percent of the funds directly benefit Dayton area school children.
Among the participants were Dayton Elementary School Principal Cory Sandburg, Healthy Communities Coalition director Christy McGill, and the entire Freshman Volleyball team of Dayton High School.
What is the Resource Bank?
Nearly 100 students in Dayton schools have been assisted through the Dayton Resource Bank in the past 2 school years.
The Resource Bank was established by the Dayton Task Force to assist students in Dayton schools who need financial help obtaining some of the things that their respective families and other groups cannot provide. Dayton Resource Bank can help with class lab and equipment fees for science, math, art, culinary arts and woodshop. Also included is coverage of costs for sports’ physicals, gym, team, and choir uniforms, and other items, such as prom dresses and tuxedo rentals.
The referral process is simple, cost effective and confidential: teachers, nurses, counselors, coaches, and clergy make “third party” referrals outlining the “needs” and the Task Force addresses the student’s needs with no compromise of student privacy.
During the 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 school years, the Dayton Resource Bank raised over $5,000 for local students. The Task Force is planning additional fundraisers, and is always looking for new members and volunteers.
How does this system work?
Students and their families are eager to “pay it forward” when they receive a benefit from the Dayton Resource Bank. A key part of the concept of the bank involves reciprocity, allowing everyone to feel the joy of giving back. Students and their families are invited to return service to their community through volunteer work for nonprofits such as the local food pantry, senior center, libraries, etc. as a “thank you.”
For example, a student needing funding for advanced science class fees at the high school can donate a fixed number of hours at the Dayton Food Pantry in return for the assistance of the “bank."
Everyone wins: the individual student, the particular school and the community at large. Contact: Dayton Task Force leader Sara Ross commented, "We are so pleased with the great success that we were able to achieve with the 5K Walk/Run this first year and we are looking forward to this event in the coming years as it grows and becomes even more successful! The money raised will benefit so many students in Dayton schools, and we are excited by those prospects! Our desire is that in the coming years we will have even more participation.”
