October Full Moon Hike up Prison Hill led by Carson City Parks and Rec this Saturday

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will host its October Full Moon Hike up Prison Hill on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 8:30 to 10 p.m., with the trail lit by the light of the moon.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the 30th annual Outhouse Races in Virginia City, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event in Carson City, Fright Night at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, Oktoberfest at the Casino Fandango, the 26th annual 'Making a Difference' Golf Tournament and much more!

Commemorative cups on sale as part of Sustainable Nevada Day

CARSON CITY — GreenUP!, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides environmental education to businesses announced that Nevada Day commemorative cups are now on sale for $10 at the Nevada Day store located at 716 N. Carson Street.

Fall is in the air and that signifies the end of the Carson Farmers Market. It has been a busy year for us with new vendors and more customers. Although we are all sad to see another season come to an end, we are relieved to have another successful year behind us and a few months of rest.

Support sought for horse protection fencing at Carson City's Centennial Park

Virginia Range Wildlife Protection Association is working with the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space to install a fence at Centennial Park. This fence will help keep the wild horses in the hills and off the golf course, softball fields and out of the businesses and neighborhoods as well.

Trails Association, Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space to host Prison Hill clean-up

2019 Pine Nut Harvest Season Kicks Off on Nevada Public Lands

The 2019 pine nut harvest season kicks off on lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Both agencies are working together to ensure the public is safely harvesting pine nuts and aware of the regulations. The length of the pine nut harvest season varies depending on crop quality and seasonal weather conditions.

This interpretive hike includes a scavenger hunt to learn about the Carson River habitat, and will help foster a love of exploring the outdoors!

Heading into Thursday and the final stretch of the work week, it is shaping up to be eventful around the capital city area featuring a morning hike along Clear Creek hosted by Muscle Powered, activities at the Carson City Library, western square dancing offered through Carson City Parks and Recreation, Food Truck Thursday at Mills Park, Ladies' Night Out at Gather, a volunteer information hour and training hosted by Carson City's CASA, a lecture entitled "100 Years Later: The 1919 Transcontinental Military Motor Convoy" featured at the Nevada State Museum, and more.

Carson City Parks and Recreation to host 'Tales of Fire and Water' hike up Goni Canyon

Join Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space this Saturday, Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for the "North Carson Geology Hike: Tales of Fire & Water."

Hikers will be able to join local geologist Tom Gray in exploring the geologic features found in Goni Canyon.

Forest Service seeks input for Winter Travel Management at Lake Tahoe

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has released the Proposed Action for the Winter Recreation and Over Snow Vehicle Travel Management Project. The Proposed Action was developed based on Forest Service criteria and feedback received from stakeholders during the Forest Plan Revision process, open house meetings and winter recreation collaborative meetings that occurred between 2011 and 2016.

Carson City skaters shred Mills Park during 3rd annual competition, winners announced

Carson City skateboarders and scooter-riders participated in the third annual skate competition hosted by Carson City Parks and Recreation, Carson City's Wheelhouse and Tahoe's Woodward.

Kids, families and spectators circled the skatepark Saturday while participants riding either skateboards or scooters tore through the cement park.

Board of Supervisor's meeting to discuss several new Carson City subdivision plans

Full Moon Sunset Hike Saturday hosted by Carson City Parks and Rec

The Carson City Parks and Recreation department will host an interpretive hike tonight, September 14 from 6:00-8:00 pm.

This is the third annual Full Moon Sunset Hike. Hikers will be starting from the Koontz Lane Trailhead at Prison Hill and will be hiking up to the top to watch the Sunset over Carson.

A break will be had to rest and take photos and appreciate the sunset. Later, attendees will hike back down under the full moon.

Hikers will need to bring layers, close-toed shoes, a flashlight or headlamp, and plenty of water.

It’s going to get hot again today with a high of 93, but don’t worry, as we get out further into the week the weather will turn more autumnal with highs in the 70s. It could be the last hot day for a while, at least until a freak 90s+ hot day in November followed by a week long blizzard, so enjoy it while it’s here!

Carson High School Cross Country hosts 2019 Sierra League Meet at Washoe Lake State Park

Thursday provided the Carson High School cross country team with a good look at the rest of the Sierra League and a little change of pace Thursday afternoon in Washoe Valley.

Temporary Schedule for the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range begins Tuesday

CARSON CITY — In response to the seasonal transition affecting daylight hours, the Rifle and Pistol Range will temporarily change its hours to Tuesday through Friday, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. starting Sept. 10, 2019. Daylight hours are beginning to reflect the occurrence of seasonal change. To ensure adequate and safe accommodations for range enthusiasts the range must adopt the new operational hours.

Addictive pickleball continues to grow in Carson City

“Pickleball is not an old geezer’s game,” so stated Dina Stultz after finishing a set at Carson’s Multi-use Athletic Center, affectionately known simply as the MAC. She wants to let everyone know that pickleball is a serious game and can help in relieving all sorts health problems including reversing or slowing bone density issues, according to her medical doctor.

Carson City's 3rd Annual BOO-nanza now accepting vendor applications from local businesses

Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space is pleased to announce our 3rd Annual BOO-nanza Halloween event on Tuesday, October 29th.

Last year, approximately 1000 children participated and we expect a bigger crowd this year. In an effort to create a safe and family friendly Halloween experience, Carson City Park, Recreation & Open Space has partnered with the Carson City Library. The Community Center will be opened for trick or treating, haunted house, and outdoor carnival.
