Outdoors With Don Q: The First, Big Outdoors Weekend of the Summer

Memorial Day weekend is nearly here, the weather is forecast to be gorgeous and for countless folks in this general area, it will be their first big outdoor adventure of 2014.

So where to go on that weekend? Well, be advised that no matter where you go (unless it is to some God forsaken location in the middle of nowhere), you can expect to encounter big crowds of people also wanting to enjoy an outdoor outing for the holiday.

Dancing Drum performance Friday at Brewery Arts Center

Seeliger Elementary and the Brewery Arts Center have partnered to bring "Dancing Drum," an interactive performance on Friday that combines high energy drumming with abundant opportunities for audience participation.

Students from Seeliger Elementary School will join New Orleans-based Dancing Drum's Steve Campbell during a section of the performance.

Be prepared for lots of great music, outstanding musicianship and a fun way to kick off your Memorial Day weekend. Tickets are $5. The show begins 7:00pm in the BAC Performance Hall, 511 W King Street in Carson City.

Wild West window seats aboard historic V&T Railroad begin Memorial Day weekend

It is full steam ahead aboard Nevada's premiere window seat into the Wild West with the 2014 season of the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad taking to the rails beginning Memorial Day weekend.

Steam train rides from Carson City to the 1860s boom-era mining town of Virginia City will begin May 24 and extend weekends through Oct. 19. Friday diesel train tours will begin June 20.
 

Carson City veteran of two wars to lead Memorial Day weekend parade in Virginia City

Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend in historic Virginia City with the annual Celebration of Heroes Parade Saturday, May 24 at noon. Taking place down C Street, the parade honors the memory of those who gave their lives for this country.

Carson City area road report for week of April 28 to May 4

Here is the Carson City area road report provided by the public works department for the week of April 28 through May 4, 2014. Beginning Monday, a project to provide utility and street improvements will begin on Vista Grande Boulevard.

The street will be closed between Topsy Lane and Old Clear Creek Road to vehicles until project completion estimated to be in June. Motorist will need to use other routes.

Carson City area road report for week of April 21-27

Road construction projects around Carson City and Lake Tahoe are underway. Carson City Public Works reports the following projects for the week: There will be lane closures and traffic control on Fairview Drive at the intersection with Carson Street from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Monday, April 21, and Tuesday, April 22.

Some Lake Tahoe recreation sites to open early

Some recreational areas around Lake Tahoe will be opened early for the 2014 season, the U.S. Forest Service announced Monday. Inspiration Point, Logan Shoals, Chimney Beach, and Secret Harbor open April 21 and Sawmill Pond and the Sandpit OHV areas open May 1. Baldwin Beach and Nevada Beach and Campground open May 9.

Carson City area road report for the week of April 14-20

Here is the Carson City area road report, courtesy of the public works department, for the week of April 14-20, 2014. There will be a single lane closure on N. Carson Street northbound approaching the intersection with Hot Springs Road on Monday, April 14, from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Only the left turn lane of the intersection will be affected.

Nine rescued from Lake Tahoe after boat flips

Nine people were rescued Saturday after their boat took on water and flipped over near Dollar Point in Lake Tahoe, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office reports.

Lt. Pete Van Arnum said El Dorado County Sheriff’s boat unit and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a report of a vessel taking on water near Dollar Point in Lake Tahoe at around 2 p.m.

Putting Up The Flag

I fly the flag every day. The kids even bought a solar powered spot light so we can leave it out at night. Mild, breezy with potential for showers around Carson City for Memorial Day weekend

While most of the Memorial Day weekend will be dry and warm, there is an increasing chance for showers and high elevation snow in the Sierra toward the end of the weekend, the National Weather Service in Reno reports.

Memorial Day boaters at Lake Tahoe reminded to clean, drain and dry

Boaters planning to launch at Lake Tahoe over Memorial Day Weekend are reminded to arrive at one of five watercraft inspection stations clean, drained and dry in order to get through the inspection process and out on the water more quickly.

All boats entering Lake Tahoe without a Lake Tahoe wire inspection seal are required to go through a mandatory inspection and purchase an inspection sticker as part of the public, private, multi-agency effort to protect Lake Tahoe from aquatic invasive species (AIS). Carson City Vietnam veterans to unveil special memorial in Fernley to fallen soldiers, nurses

The Vietnam Veterans of America, Carson City Area Chapter 388 invite you attend a Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 27, beginning at 11 AM at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.

The service will be an hour long. Immediately following the service, there will be an unveiling of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The shrine lists the names of 151 young men from Nevada who gave their lives in Vietnam. Adjacent to that are the names of eight nurses who also gave their lives in Vietnam while they were there caring for our troops.

Ride the rails into history, V&T season begins this weekend

History fills every rivet, trestle, whistle blow and clatter of the tracks. On Memorial Day Weekend passengers can take a journey more than 150 years old and join the ghosts of miners, gamblers, persons of ill-repute and politicians on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad.

Carson City steps up saturation patrol for DUI drivers over Memorial Day weekend

The Carson City Sheriff's Office will step up DUI patrols for the coming Memorial Day weekend beginning Friday through May 27.

For the holiday period stretch there will be heavy saturation patrols for DUI drivers, a DUI checkpoint, and enforcing underage drinking laws. The purpose of these activities is to ensure that drivers in Carson City are safe and sober going into and during the holiday weekend, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Darrin Sloan.

Due to the recent weather, most fish have been eating at night, pushing back the best time to go fishing on the lake. Most reports indicate that time is somewhere around 10:00AM.
