CARSON CITY, Nev. – Merchants and residents who value the risky work of police and sheriff’s deputies can show their support in a new city program to shine blue lights as a beacon to officers and tribute to those who died in the line of duty, city officials said.

The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation is holding an Open House at the Wungnema Houses at Mills Park in Carson City this Sunday, March 19, from 2 to 5 p.m. The building is accessible by the Park entrance on Saliman Road, opposite the high school. Admission to the open house is free.

Nine youth scholarship winners were named Saturday at the Fleet Reserve Association (FRA), Sierra Tahoe Branch 137, annual Scholarship Luncheon held inside Veterans Hall in downtown Carson City.

Though there are still six months of school remaining, Carson High School’s counselors say that now is the time for seniors to kick it into gear to go to college. Applications for college are due now and in the next few weeks, and scholarship opportunities begin flooding in during January.

Those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States were honored Monday in ceremonies across the country and locally at the Historic Dayton Cemetery in Dayton, the Historic Stewart Indian School Cemetery and Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City.

The Nevada Division of Tourism’s annual “Discover Your Nevada” program has officially kicked off with a new incentive for Nevadans to explore their state, Lt. Gov. Mark Hutchison announced earlier this month. That incentive is a Field Trip Fund benefitting Silver State students.

MONDAY: Memorial Day

Visitors to the Nevada State Railroad Museum on Memorial Day weekend will see the fully restored 1875 locomotive Glenbrook under steam for public viewing and can take a ride on the steam train pulled by the Virginia & Truckee locomotive No. 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and Monday.

Traffic is expected to be heavy this Memorial Day weekend. Even if you are not travelling out of town, remember to buckle up you and your passengers. If you are planning on barbequing and having a few adult beverages remember to designate a driver or take a cab home.

It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world this weekend in the Eagle Valley as more than 100 teams from all over the West Coast have converged upon the John D. Winters Centennial Park Complex in northeast Carson City for the 17th Annual All World Sports Midnight Madness slow-pitch softball tournament.

Midnight Madness has descended upon the valley, bringing with it a 72 hour softball tournament at Centennial Park. Don’t be surprised to see more cyclists on the road: an unofficial pre-ride for Epic Rides is this weekend. Head to the Nevada State Railroad Museum to see the Glenbrook all steamed up. SATURDAY:

Veterans organizations and volunteers from the Carson City area placed nearly 1,400 U.S. flags over memorial grave markers Friday afternoon at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

Vietnam veterans groups, Fleet Reserve Association of Sierra Tahoe, the Disabled Veterans of America were joined by NJROTC, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and Elks Lodge. In nearly 30 minutes, all the flags for the ceremony had been distributed and were placed over the markers.

Several Nevada museums are offering free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel including National Guard and Reserve and up to five members of their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2016.

A few days left of school, a few days left of May: summer is knocking on the door and insisting to be let in. If only it would bring some sunshine with it, we’d be set. Get the weekend started with a good time downtown: Stereo Galaxy at Westside Pour House, comedy at the Nugget, and a DJ at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar. Party 80s style at Whiskey Tavern’s karaoke party. Minden kicks off a summer of Concerts in the Park tonight with a tribute to the Beatles.

The weather this week has been a challenge but it is supposed to change for the better as we head into the long holiday weekend. Although the forecast may be warm and sunny with a chance of thunderstorms, remember the waters flowing in our rivers are just above freezing temperatures and can be dangerous.

Mother Nature almost always has something wacky in store for Northern Nevada over Memorial Day weekend. Rain or shine (or unexpected blizzard) there is something fun to be found in Carson City. Be ready for anything with this sneak peak of this weekend’s activities. Help honor those who have served our country with a flag placing at the Lone Mountain Cemetery, or at one of the several Memorial Ceremonies around the area.

FRIDAY:

Campfires and bar-be-ques are just around the corner: Memorial Day weekend is almost here. Get a jump on the fun with some live music at Living the Good Life or Glen Eagles. Learn something new with Dr. Hattori at the Nevada State Museum. An improv workshop at the Brewery Arts Center will get your creative juices flowing. The Capitol Amphitheater is where you’ll enjoy a new spin on the Taming of the Shrew, performed by the Carson High Theater Arts Department. Don’t forget a doggie-bag after a meal at Adele’s today: the Bone Appetit fundraiser for the Nevada Humane Society goes on all day.

The Disabled American Veterans and other local veterans organizations from the Carson City area will place 1,200 U.S. flags on veterans graves at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City on Friday, May 27 beginning at 4 p.m.

Other groups will be assisting, including some members of the NJROTC, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and Elks Lodge. Volunteers are welcome to help place flags and youth groups are encouraged and welcomed to participate.

With road construction underway to enhance driver safety on U.S. 50 in Lake Tahoe’s Cave Rock area, the Nevada Department of Transportation reminds motorists to anticipate minor travel delays during holidays such as Memorial Day weekend and special events.

With help from a wet winter, law enforcement agencies in Northern Nevada are preparing for a busy boating season at Lakes Tahoe, Topaz, Lahontan and others water ways following several years of drought and tough boating conditions.

With Memorial Day weekend approaching and summer around the corner, public agencies in Nevada, California and around Lake Tahoe are urging residents and visitors to practice proper food storage and trash disposal when living in or visiting bear country.
