While there may not be fireworks this Fourth of July, there are still many activities in Carson City and beyond!

Finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) show initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 10,347 for the week ending June 20, down 273 claims, or 2.6 percent, compared to last week’s total of 10,620. This is the eighth consecutive week of declines in regular initial claims.

Through the week ending June 20, there have been 538,892 initial claims filed in 2020, 517,240 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region for all to enjoy. New safety guidelines for the state of Nevada are in effect Friday, so make sure to bring a mask and practice social distancing to local events.

This is the seventh consecutive week of declines in regular initial claims. Through the week ending June 13, there have been 528,545 initial claims filed in 2020, 506,893 of which have come in the last fourteen weeks.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Several events have instituted safety measures set by the state and Center for Disease Control to keep participants safe during these times.

CARSON CITY — According to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s (DETR) May 2020 economic report, employment in Nevada is up 32,700 jobs over the month and the unemployment rate declined to 25.3 percent.

The Dayton Farmers Market opened for the 2020 season on June 11. The market will take place every Thursday this summer from 3 to 6 p.m. at 60 Second Avenue and Highway 50, across from Pizza Factory. A 21-year-old Carson City man and a 41-year-old transient woman were arrested in the 100 block of E. Long Street for possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and violating bail conditions.

According to the report, Allen Lee Parkins and Kesa Dawn Pascal were arrested by Special Enforcement Team deputies after deputies spotted Parkins and Pascal leaving a hotel known for “heavy drug traffic.”

Fresh produce, handmade jams and goods, soft serve ice cream and more will be available today, Thursday, June 11 in Dayton at the first Farmers Market of 2020. The market will be located at the corner of 2nd Street and Highway 50 in Dayton.

— A 43-year-old Carson City man was arrested on domestic battery first and probation violation after a small child called 911 to say his mother was hurt.

Anthony Robert Diaz was arrested after deputies went to a residence in the 1400 block of E. Long Street and knocked on the door. A small child answered the door and told deputies to hurry up and come up stairs to help his mom.

Deputies followed the little boy upstairs and noticed a male subject exit the first bedroom upstairs. Deputies told the man, later identified as Diaz, to go and speak to another deputy on scene.

STATELINE, Nev. — Lakeside Inn and Casino on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe announced Tuesday that it won't reopen after the coronavirus concerns are over. It is the first Lake Tahoe gaming property to permanently close.

Finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) show initial claims for unemployment insurance totaled 79,285 regular initial claims for the week ending March 4, up 7,343 claims, or 10.2 percent compared to last week’s total of 71,942.

This is the second highest weekly total in state history. Through week ending April 4, there have been 271,533 initial claims filed in 2020, this is 28,417 more than the state saw in the last two years combined.

Less than a month after the first instance of COVID-19 was announced, the state has surpassed 1,300 cases. Testing has ramped up including the addition of private labs like, Quest and LabCorp, on top of two state labs in Northern and Southern Nevada.

It’s a difficult time for everybody, especially those whose health has been affected by the pandemic. CARSON CITY — According to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s February 2020 economic report, employment in Nevada is down 1,000 jobs over the month but up 18,300 over the year, a growth rate of 1.3 percent. This marks the first time since July 2012 that Nevada has grown at a slower rate than the national average.
