UNR seeks donors for Lake Tahoe fire camera system

The success of the pilot program for fire cameras at Lake Tahoe has prompted the University of Nevada, Reno’s Nevada Seismological Laboratory to pursue funding to build out its fire camera network that rings the majestic mile-high lake.

“We’ve seen the system avert potentially large fires this summer at Tahoe, even with its minimal presence,” Graham Kent, director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory, said of the prototype system with its four cameras. “It makes sense to build this system out now to help protect the basin from devastating fires.”

Happy Birthday Nevada: 'You know you're a Nevadan if ...'

As most column writers will tell you, reader reaction to columns you’re particularly proud of can range from crickets to complaints to an occasional “good column” e-mail, phone call or comment.

And every so often, you catch lightning in a bottle.

That is what happened to me in October 2001 when I wrote a column for Nevada Day with the headline, “Signs you might be a Nevadan.”

WNC Softball: Wildcats Host Nevada Lightning at home Sunday

If its fall season portends what lies ahead, then Western Nevada College’s spring softball season should be teeming with excitement.

As their fall scrimmage schedule winds down, the Wildcats have demonstrated that they are a program on the rise, winning the past seven games. That winning streak has included series sweeps of Shasta College, Feather River College and the Nevada Stealth U-18 club.

What Works: Accentuate the Positive

In 1945, Johnny Mercer wrote “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive,” which became a hit. Subsequently, throughout the years, the song was covered by The Andrew Sisters and Bing Crosby, Bette Midler and Bing Crosby (Bing really loved the song), Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, and even the late, great, Ella Fitzgerald.

It was discovered at approximately 12:30 p.m. Sunday and has grown to 2,582 acres as of Monday morning. It is burning within the Little Yosemite Valley on both sides of the Merced River.

First woman to swim the length of Lake Tahoe recalls 1962 adventure

Some people, when they first see Lake Tahoe, think how it'd be nice to boat on top of the glass like water. Others imagine fishing on the lake stocked with big fish, while yet others think about how nice it would be to sit at the quiet and scenic shore and enjoy the sun and the view.

To nine year old Erline Christopherson, all she thought when first saw the crystal blue waters was how she'd like to swim across it. The dream was born that day in 1955.

Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra fishing report for week of August 14

Hello fellow anglers. Two weeks ago we headed out to go fishing but I made a small mistake, when I got to Highway 395 I went north instead of south.  Seven hours later we ended up in Rogue River Oregon, which is a few miles south of Grants Pass.

We stayed with family and did a lot of fishing on the Rogue River until the 107 degree heat drove us to the coast.
There, we fished out of Brookings, Oregon for salmon. The temperature was a nice 65 degrees. We fished  for a couple hours with no success so we drove the boat up the coast a few miles and fished for cod.

UPDATE 6:10 PM: The two fires in Kings Canyon have been extinguished thanks to rain and citizens who helped in the firefighting efforts, said Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi.

The Ash Canyon fire is the only one burning right now, he said. It is high up into the canyon and about 1/2 mile off of the trail. Firefighters are hiking into the area. The good news is the heavy rain aided in knocking down much of the smoke and flame, he said.

A handful of firefighters remain in the field behind Little and Roop. That fire burned about 1/2 an acre and came close to nearby homes but heavy rain and hail moved in just in time to help knock it down, Giomi said. It is currently being mopped up.
