Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra fishing report for week of August 14

Hello fellow anglers. Two weeks ago we headed out to go fishing but I made a small mistake, when I got to Highway 395 I went north instead of south.  Seven hours later we ended up in Rogue River Oregon, which is a few miles south of Grants Pass.  

We stayed with family and did a lot of fishing on the Rogue River until the 107 degree heat drove us to the coast.
There, we fished out of Brookings, Oregon for salmon. The temperature was a nice 65 degrees. We fished  for a couple hours with no success so we drove the boat up the coast a few miles and fished for cod.

Renee and I fished with my cousin Steve Hacker and his grandson Chandler. We all had great success, we kept 25 black cod, 1 green ling cod, and 1 black ling cod . We also caught and released a few sea trout and some big ugly fish called a cabezon. Let me tell you, that is one hard fish to get the hook out of due to its spines and armour plated big head.

All in all, a great trip. The only bad part of the trip was that the lightning storms followed us up there. In two and a half days there were 80 fires from Klamath Valley to the Rogue Valley and all the way into California. A scary and sad sight to see.

Now that we have returned I have found that the fishing in our area has been pretty sad also. But with the weather changing for the better our local fishing world should pick up. This week Renee and I plan to fish from Highland Lakes, over Highway 4 to Hope Valley, off Highway 88. For now here is your local report.

LAKE TAHOE:
Kokanee fishing has been good from Camp Richardson to Taylor Creek area. I talked with friend Richard who has been fishing in 75 feet of water in front of Camp Richardson and has been having good success. You can jig or troll for kokanee salmon.

Mackinaw action has been good. Best areas for trolling have been off the Tahoe City shelf or off the Cal /Neva point. Jerry Dow from Carson City was drift fishing with live minnows last week near the Logan Shoals area. Jerry caught a few nice mac's from 2 to 4 pounds.

CAPLES LAKE:
Due to the cooperation of the Eldorado Irrigation Dist. controlling the flows on the lake, the lake is only down 4" from being full.
Fishing has picked up for shore and boat anglers.
The water temps have come up so you need to get a little deeper to find the fish.
Most anglers have been trolling 20-25 feet down with #7 or a #9 Rapala.  
Garlic power bait has been most productive for shore anglers.
Ryan Zeller from Reno rented one of the resorts fishing boats and caught a nice 3 lb rainbow back in the Emigrant Cove area. He was fishing with a nightcrawler. For more information call the Caples Lake Resort at 209-258-8888.

BLUE LAKES:  
The water level has dropped but the fishing is fair.
Many anglers have told me they were trolling flashers and a crawler and caught a few fish. Shore anglers have been using salmon eggs and getting a couple.
Most fish that have been caught are in the 10 to 13 inch range.
Perfect size to fit in a frying pan.

CARSON RIVERS ALPINE COUNTY:
Last week Alpine County planted both rivers. They have been holding off due to excessive weather and runoff.
In talking with Dayne Delano from Todd's Bait and Tackle, due to the excessive water runoff,  parts of the East Fork Carson have moved four feet.
Some of the bigger holding areas have filled in with silt and mud.
But the fishing has picked up a little with our recent weather change.
Anglers have been having better success with salmon eggs or nightcrawlers due to the stained conditions of the water.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR:
The lake level has gone down, the weeds are all around the lake. But, if you can get past reeling in weeds here and there, the fishing has been fair.
If you stay in the camp ground, remember to put all items  'food related or not' in the bear box that is provided at each campsite. This is the season for bear activity.
This lake can be frustrating with all the weed activity in it but you have to remember, this lake also holds 3 to 10 pound trout. Good luck on your next fishing adventure.
