Good morning Carson City and happy Saturday! It’s going to be another grey day, with a high of 64 and a low of 44. But hey, it could be freezing, or things could be on fire, so I won’t complain! On the docket today we’ve got day two of the Rib Fest, a Virginia City train tour, museum activities, a heroes parade, and more. Carson City kicked-off the Memorial Day weekend festivities Friday during the second annual community Rockin’ Rib Fest at Casino Fandango.

As we head into a jam-packed Memorial Day weekend, activities and events around Carson City on Friday will help set the mood for what promises to be a tremendous few days ahead. Festivities include the opening day of the Rockin’ Rib Fest at Carson City's Casino Fandango, the planting of American flags on the graves of our fallen veterans at Lone Mountain Cemetery, a weekly open mic night at A to Zen, laughs at the Carson Comedy Club, live music and more.

Sierra Music Society is pleased to announce that the always popular “P’Opera!” is planning a fun-filled event with its “P’Opera! Alfresco” at Toiyabe Golf Club in Washoe Valley at 19 Lightning W Ranch Road, New Washoe City NV 89704 on Sunday, June 16th. There is only one show: 6 pm. $20 per person.

Bring your own picnic and enjoy sunshine, fresh air and “P’Opera!” Music on the beautiful grounds of Toiyabe. If you don’t have time to prepare a picnic, purchase dinner from Toiyabe GC who will be grilling burgers, dogs, and tri-tip.

For Carson High School Senior Adelina Pacheco, studying the stars is a family tradition.

If you're living in the Carson City region, you know all you have to do is wait a few minutes to have the weather change on you. Welcome to Friday, Feb. 15, 2019 and the beginning of the President's Day weekend. Carson City schools are closed today and Monday for the holiday. Gusty winds and another round of snow is expected today so take notice and be careful on the roadways.

And more than 100 singers and instrumentalists bring you Mendelssohn’s spectacular “Elijah.” Hear the concert at Carson Valley Methodist Church in Gardnerville on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. Other performances Feb. 9-17 in Incline, South Lake, and Reno.

CARSON CITY — In the years since Tom Gray first set foot in his dad’s V&T Railroad shop in 1974, the world has seen many changes. “They’re paving over all the dirt roads, old buildings are crumbling,” he observed.

Highway 395 and 108 continue to remain open for traffic as progress continues on the Boot Fire, which has burned 6,898 acres and is 39 percent contained as of Sunday morning.

“A connection with nature and the cosmos were always fundamental for me,” Caitlin Jemma says. “As a teenager I didn’t appreciate it as much. But in retrospect, I’m really glad I had time in nature.”

The promising young singer and songwriter was raised on a country acre of land in the hillsides outside of Virginia City.

A series of strong thunderstorms with lightning strikes, gusty winds and rain began to move into the Carson City and Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe areas late Tuesday afternoon.

With a chance for thunderstorms and winds expected to kick up with them, the National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch covering much of the Carson City region beginning Tuesday afternoon.

Funding for upgrades and new cameras for the 26-camera AlertTahoe network, which tracked more than 100 fires for firefighters in 2017, was announced Tuesday by the University of Nevada, Reno’s Nevada Seismological Lab Director Graham Kent in a presentation at the annual Lake Tahoe Summit.

A severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect for Western Carson City until 6:45 p.m. Sunday evening, the National Weather Service in Reno reports.

UPDATE: 4:45PM: At 4:05 p.m. Saturday, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 10 miles southwest of Gardnerville, moving north at 10 mph. Dime size hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible with this storm. Brief heavy rain is also possible with this storm. Outflow winds could reach as far northwest as South Lake Tahoe.
Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

Thunderstorms will develop across the region over the next few hours with a few strong thunderstorms likely by mid-afternoon, according to a report from the National Weather Service in Reno.

The summer heat will settle into the Carson City region this week, with daytime temperatures in the upper 90s to 100 or higher Monday through Wednesday in the capital city and Carson Valley and 100-plus in Dayton and Virginia City, according to the National Weather Service.

The seasonably hot weather continues this week with a weather pattern change that may bring thunderstorms to the Carson City region, and along with that, the danger of lightning strikes, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Fire Weather Watch.

UPDATE 2:48PM: The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Douglas County, Carson City, Central Lyon County and southern Wash County until 3:30 p.m.

Beginning Friday, Memorial Day weekend in Carson City will feature the community’s first Rockin’ Rib Fest at Casino Fandango. The four day inaugural event will bring award-winning rib cookers from around the country to the capital city, including Austin’s Texas Lightning BBQ, Chicago BBQ Company, Back Forty Texas BBQ, and local favorite Carson City BBQ.

Lyon County crews are addressing heavy rainfall and lightning issues that developed Wednesday during a series of storms. Lyon 911 dispatch reports the loss of communications sire on Rawe Peak, said County Manager Jeff Page.

Strong thunderstorms have moved into the Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County areas, bringing periods of heavy rain, lightning, hail and ponding water, according to the National Weather Service.
