Indiana artist claims fifth victory in Nevada Duck Stamp Contest
Submitted by editor on Mon, 11/17/2014 - 10:31amAfter winning more than 60 wildlife stamp art contests, including this year’s Nevada Duck Stamp Art Contest, most people would probably start getting a little cocky. But artist Jeffrey Klinefelter isn’t like most people. No matter how many wins Klinefelter gets, he never takes anything for granted.
“I’m very surprised,” he said. “There are a lot of talented artists out there and winning one of these contests is really hard to do.”
Senator Square: CHS Marching Band wins Nevada Day Battle of the Bands
Submitted by editor on Sun, 11/09/2014 - 9:50amThe CHS Marching Band competed last weekend in the Nevada Day Battle of the Bands held at Spanish Springs High School. The band finished first in their division beating out rivals Douglas High School.
They received the caption for "Outstanding Music." This award marks the first time in nine years that the marching band took home a first place trophy in a field show competition. Way to Go Big Blue Thunder!

Senator Square: Carson High senior Caden Lehman wins national rodeo event
Submitted by editor on Sun, 10/26/2014 - 10:06amCaden Lehman, a senior at Carson High School, an officer for the Capitol FFA program, and an officer in the Douglas-Carson High School Rodeo Club, recently had his biggest win doing what he loves. He is involved in Team Roping and Calf Roping and is a member of the American Cowboys Team Roping Association.
Recently at the ACTRA National Finals in Reno at the Livestock Events Center, Caden won the Super 7 National Championship, landing him and his partner, Jack Curry of Gardnerville, each new Royal T 3-horse trailers, buckles, and $10,000 cash.

The problem is that the Nevada Supreme Court is overwhelmed by appeals. But the proposed fix, detailed in Senate Bill 463 (2013), does not address the fact that the Court has no authority to decide which cases it will hear. Instead, Nevada must be just like everybody else, a “government of, by and for lawyers.”
Both problems have a simple, quintessentially conservative solution, proposed by Gary Schmidt, recently a candidate for State Senator from district 16 -- Tort Reform:

The award is given annually to recipients who have demonstrated significant results towards conservation, management or enhancement of wildlife. An individual, non-profit organization, outdoor sports club, or business can be nominated for the award.

Tasters go for the bold and zesty during first day of Carson City chili cook-off

The two-day event at Glen Eagles Restaurant, which continues through Sunday, has brought dozens of the best chili cookers from around the region hoping for a chance to win prize money, bragging rights and a trip to Las Vegas for the World Chili Cook-off Championship. The public is invited to Sunday's event and sampling costs next to nothing, organizers said.

Regional chili competitions to spice up Carson City this weekend

The public is invited to sample red and verde chili as well as salsas. Tasting kits are $3 each. The "People's Choice" Chili award will be determined by the vote collected by everyone who samples.
Carson City Bartender Wins Cocktail Challenge

Six people, chosen at random, competed in an Iron Style Cocktail Competition: 10 minutes to create a beverage for the 4 US Bartenders Guild judges. Steven Sedillos, Adele's server and bartender/mixologist at The Blue Bull, tied for first place with his Basil-Berry Sparkler.
Carson City Sheriff's Office warns of new phone scam using law enforcement officers names
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 04/23/2014 - 10:29amThe Carson City Sheriff's Office is again receiving calls from the public in regards to money scams. The first one involves citizens being called and told that a warrant for their arrest has been issued for failure to show up for jury duty.
The caller identifies himself using an actual deputy or Nevada Highway Patrol officers name to convince the called party that this is real.
The caller has also given the name of current judges as being the ones who have signed the warrant. He will then try to convince the called party to send a MoneyPak or some other form of pre-paid debit card.

UNR student Sontag competition team awarded $50,000 for entrepreneurship

Using flood gate automation, field surveys and water and soil sensors all connected to the cloud, Irrigo is developing a more efficient way to irrigate agricultural fields.

NCJFCJ receives $2 million for Juvenile Drug Court Training

Presented by the Brewers Association, GABF is the largest national beer competition that recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. The top three winners in the competition’s 84 beer-style categories were announced Oct. 12 at the Great American Beer Festival awards ceremony held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colo.

Nevada Rural Housing Authority wins national award

According to NMA the judges were greatly impressed by the Nevada Rural Housing Authority’s home financing program to expand homeownership opportunities in the rural parts of the state.

The next Red, White and Blue Barbecue at the Carson Nugget in Carson City will feature a Men and Women’s Swimsuit Contest during the June 29th day-long barbecue from 1 to 7 p.m. The contest will be held from 2-5:30 p.m. with the finals being held inside the casino at the Show Bar beginning at 5:30 p.m.
All signups will receive a free barbecue plate. Because the barbecue is a family event, there are ground rules regarding the competition:

The next barbecue will be held on the Carson Street lot, across from the casino on Saturday, June 29th from 1:00 until 7:00 PM. This will be the second in a series of four “Red, White & Blue Barbecues” this summer. Admission is FREE and offer fun for all ages. Must pay for food.
