Dancing with the Carson City Stars Returns Feb. 22
When the Carson City version of Dancing with the Stars spins into action on Saturday, Feb. 22, it will be the product of months of preparation and legwork from more than 10 local celebrity dancers.
Nursing students from Western Nevada College will host the second Carson City version of Dancing with the Stars at 7 p.m. at Carson High School. The event is a fundraiser to help the students attend the National Student Nurses Association Convention April 9-13 in Nashville, Tenn. There, they will receive leadership and scholarship information, disaster preparedness training, and tips for taking the national nursing certification exam.
“Oh, yes, it’s taken a lot of effort,” said Ila Bottoms, WNC’s NSNA Club president who is co-chairing the event with Rebecca Cornell. “From tracking the stars and getting footage of them and arranging when the were dancing … but the biggest challenge is we wanted to involve everyone in the club.”
Tickets cost $15 at the door and are available for $12 in advance. VIP tables include appetizers, dessert, refreshments and a front row seat are $400 for eight people. Doors open at 6 p.m., with dancing starting at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Associated Students of Western Nevada office in the Dini Student Center at WNC Carson City, The Purple Avocado and Yaples Ballroom Dance in Carson City, and Especially for You in Gardnerville.
Spectators can expect to see the latest dance moves by celebrity dancers including Sheriff Ken Furlong and Miss Nevada Diana Sweeney.
“Call me old-fashioned, but I do realize how much we can do in this community when we play together,” Furlong said. “Nurses, doctors, the arts, all of these folks kick in their part. For every ounce I give them, they give tons back. Public safety goes a long way when we have good relations in the community.”
The roster of celebrity dancers vying for the coveted trophy also includes Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell and his wife Susan, Nugget Casino General Manager Star Anderson, Carson City Supervisor Jim Shirk, meteorologist Jeff Thompson, Carson Tahoe Cancer Research Center Supervisor Ann Proffitt, Adele’s Restaurant & Lounge owner Charlie Abowd and Carson High School math teacher Jennifer Walls. Last year, Miss Carson City Vanessa Macias won the trophy along with partner Ivan Ochoa.
Bottoms said there has been a great response for contributions to the event’s silent auction. A 50-50 raffle is also planned.
Many people are contributing to the event, including Stacy Giomi, fire chief; local judges, Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company’s Stephanie Arrigotti, Gina Davis and Georgia Wright; and commentators Katie Grimm and Deb Doran. For information, go to the Facebook page here.
