Regional chili competitions to spice up Carson City this weekend
International Chili Society chefs will compete for a chance to go to the World Cook-Off in Las Vegas. The public is invited to sample red and verde chili as well as salsas. Tasting kits are $3 each. The "People's Choice" Chili award will be determined by the vote collected by everyone who samples.
On site there will be military equipment, a dunk tank, Miss Nevada 2013 Diana Sweeney of the Carson City area, raffle prizes, live music and most of all, great family fun. Craft fair action and chili demonstration begin at 11 a.m. both days.

Whether you like yours bold, spicy and zesty; hot, mild or medium with a kick, you won't want to miss the International Chili Society’s High Sierra Regional Chili Cookoff and Nevada Captial Chili Cookoff this Saturday and Sunday at Glen Eagles Restaurant in Carson City.
Each day cooks will submit red chili, chile verde, and salsa for judging, the winners of each category, each day, qualify for the World’s Championship Chili Cookoff in October. Action begins at 11 a.m. both days.
The cookoffs are held on the grounds of Glen Eagles in conjunction with a large craft fair. This year all proceeds will go to Honor Flight, the charity that takes veterans to Washington, D.C. That organization will have military and patriotic displays.
Saturday's event is the ICS High Sierra Regional competition. Red and Verde winners also qualify for the November World Food Championship in Las Vegas. Sunday's is the ICS Nevada Capital Regional competition. The public is invited to sample red and verde chili as well as salsas. Tasting kits are $3 each. The "People's Choice" Chili award will be determined by the vote collected by everyone who samples.
Tasters are invited to participate as judges for any or all of the competitions. Salsa will be judged at noon each day, chile verde at 1 p.m., and red chili at 3 p.m.
Entry into the red chili competition is $35, plus one gallon peoples' choice; chili verde entry is $25 and salsa entries are $15. Dry camping is available on site. Winners will receive prize money and trophies.
