Halloween is two weeks away, the Nevada Day Parade a few days before, and the 2016 election a few days after. Advocates to End Domestic Violence is holding a week long toiletry drive beginning today: donations will be accepted at Classy Seconds Thrift Shop and are much appreciated.

Harvest time at the Nevada State Railroad Museum (NSRM) started Saturday in Carson City with a cornucopia of family fun and entertainment.

The Harvest Train returned to Carson City Saturday morning for another two-weekend run in October, steaming into Wabuska Station to begin its celebration of the fall season.

The second round of storms is expected to arrive late Saturday afternoon in Carson City bringing rain and strong, gusty winds that could bring down tree limbs and power lines, according to the National Weather Service. There’s also concern that rain could cause flash flooding in the Little Valley Fire area in Washoe Valley and Emerald Fire area at south shore Lake Tahoe.

I’m usually a lover of sunny days, but right now I say bring on the rain. The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.

Restless spirits of the old west haunt the Nevada Northern Railway on the weekly Haunted Ghost Train. Every Saturday in October, this fun train ride with ghost stories, track-side vignettes and spooky spirits is a fun outing for the whole family. Passengers are encouraged to dress in costumes.

On Thursday, October 27 bring your family and friends to the annual Haunted Hayride of the Historical Society of Dayton Valley. This free event is our "give-back" to the community and celebrates Dayton history in a fun, family-friendly evening. Continuous old-fashioned hayrides will circle through an Old Town Dayton filled with ghosts of the past, all of whom share a lighthearted attitude toward their history. The evening starts at the museum, where there will also be games for the kids and light refreshments. Costumes are encouraged and kids from 0 to 102 are invited!

Carson Tahoe Health is excited to present its fourth annual Spooktacular party, a family-oriented Halloween celebration open to the community. The free event takes place on October 27 from 3:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M. in the north parking lot at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center.

A series a powerful storms will bring very strong winds, rain and high elevation snow to the Sierra and Western Nevada. The first round of gusty winds is expected Thursday night through Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

National Weather Service forecasters say it is likely that a weather system expected to arrive later this week will bring strong, gusty winds to the Carson City region beginning late Thursday into Friday and mountain rain and snow that could affect travel through the weekend.

Trick-or-treating in the Nevada state capital will occur on Halloween night — Monday, October 31 — this year, according to the Carson City Manager’s Office.

Filled with the spirit of fall in the air, the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City, and its supporters, Friends of the NSRM, will host the second annual Harvest Train event over two weekends in October.

As the sun sets earlier and the nights get colder, we prepare for all things autumn. In Carson City that’s Nevada Day, but Halloween is just as beloved. Halloween Scary-oke with Millers Entertainment! We're going to have a spooktacular event to get you ready for Halloween. Everyone who shows up in costume gets a chance to win a free drink every hour, and if you are brave enough to sing, you get another entry per song!

We'll also have a costume contest. Grand prize winner gets $50 cash + a free 3 hour karaoke party at a venue of your choice (distance limitations apply). Runner up gets a $25 bar tab, and everyone who shows up in costume gets a chance to win great raffle prizes all night long.

Downtown you’ll find the wine walk, a rummage sale at the Veterans Memorial Hall, and the Fall Vintage Market at Due Sorella. Toast the season at Fandango: Oktoberfest has returned. Do you love animals? Do you want to help them? Do you want to have fun doing it? If your answer is yes then we invite you to come and play CASI bingo. CASI is an all volunteer non-profit dedicated to raising money to build and equip the new animal shelter in Carson City.

Doors open at 11:30 AM and the first game starts at 12:30 PM. Buy in is $10 and extra packs are $5. Special games are $1 each. We also have a 50/50 raffle and door prizes too. No need to worry about lunch we offer hot dogs at our snack bar and sometimes the wonderful volunteers will bring a yummy homemade soup.

Carson City Cruise, a local classic car and hot rod club, collected unwanted Halloween costumes Saturday afternoon in the Bully's Sports Bar and Grill parking lot at the corner of North Carson Street and West College Parkway.

Whoa doggy, what a weekend. Dayton Valley Days, the Steampunk Ball and Parade in Virginia City, and the Western Heritage Festival at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park are just the tip of the iceberg. The Nevada Day Classic, an 8k run and 2 mile walk/run presented by Tahoe Mountain Milers, is hosting another great event during the packet pickup at the Carson Mall and is open to the public, regardless of participation in the Nevada Day Classic.

Back by popular demand is the Scarecrow Festival at the Carson Mall, held Thursday through Saturday this week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Trunk n Treat is a version of trick-or-treating, but instead of children going door to door to collect candy, they go from trunk to trunk.

We'll also be collecting Non Perishable Food which will be donate to "Food For Thought".

Trophy will be awarded to "Best Decorated" Halloween Themed Car. (People's Choice)

Tahoe Tenderloins and Ramblin Rose will be selling food and Hot Drinks.

Carson City Cruise - Meet N Greet and Nevada Rural Housing Authority will be hosting "Costumes for a Cause" at Bully's Sports Bar in Carson City. Come by any time between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to drop off your donations, show off your wheels, or just join in the fun.

As always, the Meet will be open to ALL Cars, Trucks and Bikes. We'll be accepting New and Gently Used Halloween Costume Donations for local children in Shelters.

Since 1989 the annual Nevada Day Classic, an 8K Run or 2-mile Run/Walk presented by the Tahoe Mountain Milers, brings together hundreds of runners and walkers of all shapes and sizes — as Halloween costumes are encouraged — who hit the streets of the historic West Side of Carson City with Guide Dog Puppies-in-Training serving as course marshals to woof them on! Families and groups can participate in the walk, enjoy the race breakfast, and help celebrate Nevada by enjoying the Nevada Day Parade that immediately follows the Classic.

The works of four Carson City artists were recognized Monday in a statewide art contest using recyclable material.
Student artists Stella Thornton and Jessica Preston, and adult artists Lisa Sheppard and Emily J. Cervi were listed as having either placed or received honorable mentions as part of the contest to recognize America Recycles Day.

A joint law enforcement operation to check on the status of sex offenders in Carson City, Lyon and Douglas counties was conducted the last week of October that resulted in 96 offender personal contacts and a total of 122 community personal contacts, authorities said.

Volunteers. They’re a cornerstone to our involvement in the community, allowing us to save even more lives and bring people and pets together. Volunteers provide support at the shelter and at numerous events, assist with administrative work, walk dogs and much, much more — such as the volunteer who went above and beyond to save a litter of three kittens who were stuck in a drain pipe near the southern end of Carson City.
