Outdoors with Don Q: Ookpik Wilderness Lodge on Babine Lake

Elaine and I just returned from a memorable visit to a very special place: It was our second visit to that remote, far-north locale. The first time was about 15 years ago, when Elaine and her late husband Jim McGee and I went there to film Canadian fishing experiences for our weekly TV show.

Well, be advised that no matter where you go (unless it is to some God forsaken location in the middle of nowhere), you can expect to encounter big crowds of people also wanting to enjoy an outdoor outing for the holiday.

Column: Driving is interesting and an adventure in Carson City

Driving a vehicle is very interesting and often an adventure in Carson City. I have found that when driving in our fair city, you must be on your toes at all times and be ready to react to whoever is approaching from any direction.

In my less-than-humble opinion, Carson City has more than its fair share of dumb, stupid, indifferent, inattentive, careless, reckless and rude drivers; and I seem to encounter many of them when driving around town.

Here are some examples of what I have experienced around Carson City – Do any of these sound familiar to you?

Outdoors with Don Q: Take a summer vacation at Great Basin National Park

Here is a suggestion if you would like to take an mid-summer vacation at an out-of-the-way location, right here in the state of Nevada.

If you are interested, did you know that our very own White Pine County is home to one of the Nation's least visited and Nevada's only National Park: The 77,000 acre Great Basin National Park?

Outdoors with Don Q: Be fire smart and create a fire-safe zone

With our current long daylight hours, extremely hot weather, fierce afternoon thunder boomers, high winds, low humidity, and bone-dry vegetation, you need to be aware of the ever-increasing fire danger surrounding us.

Our countryside is a disaster waiting to happen, and it would only take a moment of carelessness, sparks from target shooting, illegal fireworks, a hot vehicle muffler on a dirt road, an abandoned campfire or a tossed cigarette to create a roaring inferno.

Outdoors with Don Q: Wildflowers and trout fishing at Frog Lake

Two weeks ago, I wrote an article about the wildflowers blooming along the paved highway in the Davis Lake area of Plumas County, California.

This week's article is about a high-altitude hike that Elaine and I took to little Frog Lake in the Mokelumne Wilderness Area of California, as our way to celebrate Father's Day on June 16.

Our purpose for that Sunday hike was three-fold: To walk on snow fields (which we did), to photograph wildflowers (which we did) and to fish for rainbow trout (which we did).

Our trip was the result of a chance meeting with Gary and Birgitta Metz of Carson City. We met them at Duke's Steak House in the Fandango Casino, when our dinner party was there in early May to celebrate my birthday on May 08, and his dinner party was there to celebrate his birthday on May 06.

There were a whole bunch of winners and a heck of a lot more losers in this year’s drawings for tags for Pronghorn Antelope, Black Bear, Mule Deer, Rocky Mt. Elk, California Bighorn Sheep, Desert Bighorn Sheep, Rocky Mt. Bighorn Sheep and Rocky Mt. Goat.

If you are a serious fisherman and are interested in winning some money, be advised that there are not one, but two fishing derbies coming up in the very near future in this area.

One of the derbies is the Lake Davis (California) Spring Fishing Derby which will be held on Saturday, June 15.
The other one is a "Wide Open" Derby which will be held at Topaz Lake on Saturday-Sunday, June 15-16.

If you're interested, here is some information on both derbies:

Outdoors with Don Q: Having outside fun at two nearby recreation spots

If you are looking for somewhere in this general area to having fun in the outdoors (camping, fishing, photographing, sightseeing, etc.), then look no further than two locations in nearby Plumas County in California.
I'm referring to Davis Lake and Frenchman Reservoir.

Davis Lake:
It can be reached from Carson City by taking U.S. 395 north to Reno.
Then from Reno, drive past Bordertown and the Nevada-California state line to a junction with California S.R. 70 at Hallelujah Junction.

At Hallelujah Junction, take S.R. 70 west toward Portola and Quincy.
