Don Q's Nevada and northern California fishing report for week of Dec. 11-17

Here's this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, northern California and the Sierra, including Lake Tahoe.

Your best bet, at least for now, is to stay off any ice until it is determined the ice is thick enough to hold human weight. Ice fishing reports should trickle in over the coming weeks. This report is for the week of Dec. 11-17.

Carson City Sheriff's Office 2013 Employees of the Year announced

On December 3, 2013, the Sheriff's Office recognized its outstanding performers for the year. Each received a plaque and cash award for their contributions to the department and the community:

Outdoors with Don Q: Selected personal memories from the year 2013

As I look forward to the year of 2014 with high expectations, hopes and dreams, this is a good time to reflect back on some selected personal memories from the rapidly ending year of 2013.

Here are my top memories of this year, ranging all the way from Carson City to British Columbia and the Yukon in Canada:

Outdoors with Don Q: Don't understand rule No. 2? See rule No. 1

With winter weather creeping around the corner, and with many California waters closed for the year as of November 15, this is an annual reminder for those fishermen who are done fishing for the year.

Many of you prefer not to fish during the winter months or have absolutely no interest in ice fishing, so this article is specifically written for you. (Hmmm, come to think of it, this article is also worth reading by those of you who plan to continue fishing until the weather warms back up, again).

Don Q's fishing report for week of Nov. 20-27

Here is this week's fishing report of rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and southern Oregon. This report is for the week of Nov. 20-27. Many California mountain waterways are closed for the season but a few remain open for fishing.

Outdoors with Don Q: Nov. 18 is a very significant date in the Far North

This is my annual reminder that November 18 is a very significant date in the lives of some 4,212 hardy Alaskans (as of the 2010 census).

Those folks live in a unique location known as Barrow, Alaska, which is the northernmost community in the United States.

It is located in the Far North, on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, about 320 miles north of the Arctic Circle, and roughly about 1,300 miles south of the North Pole.

On November 18, the sun sets below the horizon at Barrow and it will not peek back up over the horizon until January 23 (weather permitting).

Outdoors with Don Q: Another fun-filled day in the great outdoors visiting Caples Lake

Elaine and I spent an enjoyable day in the Great Outdoors last Sunday, which included spincasting for trout and taking photographs.

It was a fun-filled day that you might want to replicate in the near future, before Old Man Winter arrives with all of his cold, frost, snow and ice.

Don Q's Nevada and Northern California fishing report for week of Nov. 13

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. This report is for the week of Nov. 13. Friday, Nov. 15 is the last day to fish in most California waterways. Go here to learn more. Opening day for California fishing is the last Saturday in April.

Final reminder of California waters closing

This is a final reminder that many nearby California waters will close to fishing on Friday, November 15.
So if you want to fish any of them, you better hustle because you are rapidly running out of time.
Those waters will not re-open until the last Saturday in April next year (April 26, 2014), and that is a long, long time to wait to wet your line.

Outdoors with Don Q: Trout fishing at Pyramid Lake in November

If you are a trout fisherman, you might want to consider taking a fishing trip (or more than one) to Pyramid Lake this month to fish for Lahontan Cutthroat trout that can run up to double digits in weight.

Old timers told me, many years ago, that the two months of November and March are the best times of the year to fish at that large desert lake, north of Reno-Sparks. And, through the years, I have found that to be true, even though I have fished at Pyramid many other months of the year.

Outdoors with Don Q: A few more days left to fish many California waters

This is my annual reminder that many California waters will close to fishing on Friday, November 15. So if you want to fish any of them, you better hustle because you are rapidly running out of time.

Those waters will not re-open until the last Saturday in April next year (April 26, 2014), and that is a long, long time to wait to wet your line. Here is a partial list of some of the nearby waters that will be closing:

The Nevada Day 2013 celebration continues all weekend long

As an "Old Timer" who was born and raised in Carson City, the Nevada Day celebration has always been something special in my life.

Through many years of living in Carson City, I have enjoyed many of the activities associated with the celebration of our state's admission to the Union, way back on October 31, 1864.

Outdoors with Don Q: Why five adults were crying Monday and Tuesday

For the record, four adults (Chuck and Barbara Van Hise, plus Don and Elaine Quilici, all of Carson City) were crying at the Van Hise home on the afternoon of October 21. And, then the following afternoon, we would be joined by my son Jim, crying at his home.

Why was everyone crying on those two fateful days in late October?
Was it because someone had died? Nope.
Was it because someone had a serious illness? Nope.
Was it because someone had a serious injury? Nope.
Was it because there had been some bad news? Nope.

Outdoors with Don Q: A short but interesting visit to Elko

Elaine and I recently returned from an interesting, three-day, two-night visit to Elko, way over in Northeastern Nevada. We are both members of the Board of Directors of the Nevada Operation Game Thief (OGT) Citizens Board.

That OGT Citizens Board has been in existence since 1987, and it is the small, private group that pays rewards for information that leads to the conviction of poachers of Nevada's wildlife.

Outdoors with Don Q: Head to Apple Hill for fresh fruit, veggies and wine selections

Six local ladies just returned from an enjoyable, day-long visit to Apple Hill. They were: Mary Bottoms, Patricia Isaman, Mary Morris and Elaine Quilici of Carson City plus Emily Bradburn and Lorraine Scholes of Dayton.

The ladies were six of the passengers on a special, once-a-year, chartered bus that traveled to Apple Hill from the Carson Senior Center.

If you are a newcomer to our area or if you have never been there, fall is a great time of the year to visit Apple Hill. And, if you are a newcomer, you are probably wondering, “What and where in the heck is Apple Hill?”

Outdoors with Don Q: Take time to enjoy the fall color 'quakies'

This is my annual reminder to enjoy the spectacular displays of the colorful leaves on quaking aspen trees, also known as 'quakies' at this time of the year.

On Sunday morning, Elaine and I took a drive to Hope Valley, California to see those colors and they are spectacular. If you want to see them, do not delay — you better hurry because they are at their prime.

Outdoors with Don Q: Lots of fall colors and no fishing in the high country

Elaine and I just returned from a three-day, two-night, fun-filled visit to the Sierra Nevada mountains, just west of Bishop, Calif. The purpose of our return visit to the mountains was to do like we had done in 2012 at this same time of the year:

Outdoors with Don Q: Pyramid Lake trout season opens Oct. 1

This is an annual reminder that nearby Pyramid Lake, which is located about 30-35 miles north of Reno-Sparks, will open on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013 to fishing for Lahontan cutthroat trout.

That large, desert lake (roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) has a three-month trout closure, each year, from July 01 to September 30. Here are all kinds of interesting information about that lake:

Outdoors with Don Q: Take a Canadian vacation trip for 2014

Last week, I wrote about our visit to the remote Ookpik Wilderness Lodge on Babine Lake in British Columbia.
This week, I would like to offer a suggestion for taking a 2014 vacation trip beginning in Smithers, British Columbia, traveling to Watson Lake in the Yukon and returning to Smithers.

It will basically replicate the trip we took, after our return to Smithers from staying at the Ookpik Wilderness Lodge. If you are interested and if you have the vacation time, you might want to consider a 2014 Canadian vacation trip.

Don Q's fishing report for week of Sept. 4-10

Here is the fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. Don't forget that Saturday, Sept. 7 is free fishing day in California. You can fish without a license. This report is for the week of Sept. 4 through Sept. 10.
