Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sat, 03/15/2014 - 9:15amIf you're getting tired of our winter cold, frost, ice and snow (what little we have received so far), you might want to consider a vacation trip to Hawaii.
Elaine and I, our son Jim, daughter-in-law Kathi and my cousin Lorraine Scholes and her husband Bob just returned, earlier this week, from a fun-filled 14-day vacation trip to Honolulu on the Island of Oahu (4 days) and to Poipu on the Island of Kauai (10 days).

Outdoors with Don Q: The new Nevada fishing license year
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 02/27/2014 - 11:54amIf you’re a fisherman or fisherwoman, it’s that time of the year to remind you to purchase your Nevada 2014-2015 fishing license. That new fishing license year begins on March 1 and will run through the last day in February, 2015.
As a special tip you would be well advised to purchase that new license ASAP, because if you forget, go fishing after March 1 and get checked by “The Friendly Old Game Warden,” he isn’t going to be happy nor will you.

Outdoors with Don Q: Late winter offers lots of opportunities for staying busy
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 02/13/2014 - 6:23amIf you're not into traditional winter sports such as ice fishing, ice skating, downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing or snowmobiling, there is not a lot to do in late winter...for most people.
Some choose to stare out the window, complain about the snow, ice, frost and darkness of wintertime and stay glued to their TV sets. However, there are plenty of activities to take your mind off our cold weather, dark mornings and evenings, if you would like to do so.

Outdoors with Don Q: Escaping Carson City in the wintertime
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 01/23/2014 - 12:17amFor several years, Elaine and I have fled Carson City for a short time in the month of January or February to escape the cold, snow and ice of our area in the wintertime. This year was no exception, except, sadly, there is no snow.
We had been invited to be guests at the home of my cousin Lorraine and her husband Bob Scholes of Dayton, who spend the winter months in Indio, Calif.
If you, too, would like to temporarily escape winter in Carson City for the next couple of months, here is what we did:

Outdoors with Don Q: Work now to smell the roses when summer arrives
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 01/09/2014 - 1:07pmIf you are like me, I would be willing to bet that by now, you are feeling trapped in your home by our winter weather.
And, as a die-hard winter addict, I love cold days, frosty nights, frigid temperatures, deep snow, thick ice, long hours of darkness and the starkness of our landscapes in the wintertime. However, I must admit that sometimes our winter season even wears me down a little bit.
So, when I am tired of browsing on the internet, playing card games on my computer and feel like the walls are closing in on me, I take some remedial action that you, too, might try.

Most importantly, remember that if you do make any resolutions, be sure to follow through with what you resolve to do in this new year. Resolutions are easy to make, but sometimes hard to accomplish.

Merry Christmas to You and Yours from our cabin
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 12/24/2013 - 6:09amA very merry Christmas to all of you from the Quilici cabin, which is located near Davis Lake, Calif.
The cabin is on a gravel road that the county does not plow in the wintertime, so when it snows, we have to snowshoe to reach it. It is our favorite location for spending Christmas every year.
