Mile High Jazz Band presents "Jazz in the Merry Month of May," a program of big-band jazz favorites in the Basie-Ellington tradition, featuring vocalist Sheryl Adams and guest vocalist June Joplin, on Tuesday, May 8, 8-10 pm, at Comma Coffee, 312 S. In honor of Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day, High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents a USO-style “dime-a-dance” party to honor veterans and servicepeople May 19 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. There will be a lesson at 7 p.m., with the social dance at 8-10:30 p.m. Men may purchase tickets for 10 cents a dance (or 12 tickets for $1). Between 8 and 9 p.m., each time you dance with a different woman, give her a ticket, which will be entered into a 9 p.m. drawing for raffle prizes.

No, I can't dance, but you can come watch and laugh as I try tomorrow night at the “Local Celebrities Who Think They Can Dance” event at the Carson Nugget.

The event is put on by the High Sierra Swing Dance Club, and involves getting some local "celebrities" to compete in a mini "Dancing with the Stars"-style contest. If you are the betting type, I'd put my money on Sheriff Kenny Furlong to win.

In the heart of the historic district of Carson City, the BAC and the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall hosts more than 100 events annually in multiple venues, including theater productions, concerts, art classes, children’s programs, recitals and receptions.

You can now call it a regular sign of Spring in Carson Valley. The third edition of the Genoa Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival will bring together an outstanding lineup of performers, artists and characters April 26th to the 29th.

The Carson City Senior Citizens Center will be holding open auditions for the 2012 Senior Follies production of “Those Delightful Decades.” This production will be co-directed by Norma Conway and Carla Wilson.

This annual production is a fundraiser for the senior meals programs here in Carson City. If you are age 35 or older and would like to be a part of this wonderful fundraising project we would love to have you share your talents with us. It is a variety show consisting of musical and comedy acts ranging from the 1920’s through today.

Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts features the 18-member Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Sheryl Adams, presenting jazzy versions of favorite love songs for Valentine's Day, and other swinging, big-band selections.

Highlights of the evening include guest soloist Gerry Wright, soprano sax, playing "When I Fall in Love" and "My Funny Valentine," and guest vocalist Michael Coleman singing "What a Wonderful World" and "Beyond the Sea."

Forget the partridge in a pear tree, Tahoe South has 13 days of Christmas at Heavenly Village spanning Dec. 19 to Dec. 31 with live music, ice sculpting, fire dancers, professional ice skaters, interactive games, dining, shopping, photo opportunities inside a giant snow globe and a fireworks display.

Some Nevadans are trying to start a new political party called the "DuoFreedomists" which they claim would serve moderates put off by the Republicans and Democrats. The group's policy goals to “freeze, shrink and shift” taxation and spending is very similar to those of the Tea Party.

Carson High School teacher Erin Been's passion for fitness has made her a Healthy Schools Program Champion, a recognition awarded by Alliance for a Healthier Generation. She has worked to make CHS students and teachers make fitness more fun with programs like morning yoga classes, incorporating dance into phys-ed classes and offering after-school programs to promote nutrition and healthy cooking.

Carson High football coach Blair Roman recognized the seniors on his team at the season-ending awards banquet Monday night. The team has won a share of the league title three straight years, including this season's 10-2 record.

Lake Tahoe South is New Year’s celebration central with Snow Globe, a three-day outdoor music festival with over 40 world-class musicians on three main stages, firework shows, combined with a myriad of outdoor recreation, entertainment and nightlife, providing action-packed holiday season for kids of all ages.

The Mile High Jazz Band and vocalist Sheryl Adams will be joined by Rita Geil and other award-winning poets for an evening of big-band jazz and poetry on Tuesday, December 13, 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., at Comma Coffee. The theme of the evening, "Illuminations," relates to the holidays and to life.
