Nevada and Northern California fishing report through Feb. 7

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and Southern Oregon. This report is for the week of Feb. 1-7.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
With almost "spring like" weather conditions, the fishing has been great!
Areas with Pond Smelt have been attracting a lot of beauties and the best lures have been “Matching the Hatching”.
Lures featuring silver and white as well as some black and silver, the Tube Fly from Arctic Fox,  and Drop-shot soft plastic minnow with an application of Pro-Cure's Trophy Trout Scent. And don’t forget to make that bait dance!

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Brian Roccucci of Big Daddy’s Guide Service (539) 283-4103 (www.bigdaddyfishing.com) reports:
Can Winter Time "Troutin" Get Any Better? We have been fishing under almost "spring like" weather conditions with cool mornings, pleasant afternoons and hot action on Lake Almanor's trophy trout.
I have been concentrating my efforts along the east shore from the dam to Lake Cove working fish that are eager to feed on the lake's Pond Smelt.
This time of year it is common to find balls of these bait fish "corralled" up along the east shore, usually pushed there by hungry fish and feeding birds.
The water temps have been running from the mid to upper 30 degree range, and at these temps the Pond Smelt are one of the few food sources available to the fish, luckily there are plenty of them.
Judging by the distended bellies and the incredibly intense battles these "footballs" are offering, I would say they are getting plenty to eat.
The fish we have been landing are mostly Bows with a few Browns and have been running 2 to 2.5 lbs with several kickers in the 3 to 4 pound range each day. We have found the best action during the first few hours of the morning with the bite tapering off a little as the day goes on. Some mornings double and even triple hook-ups have been quite a common occurrence.
These fish are strictly focused on the Pond Smelt so in most cases it is best to try and "Match the Hatch" with lures featuring silver and white as well as some black and silver; that said, the Pond Smelt pattern Tube Fly from Arctic Fox is always a solid choice.
I fish these trolling flies a lot this time of year, and in addition to the Pond Smelt pattern the Orange has also been hooking its fair amount of fish.
The other rig that has been producing consistent action is a drop-shot soft plastic minnow. I was introduced to these by a friend nearly 20 years ago while fishing Butt Lake. They did a great job of imitating the Pond Smelt and continue to do so to this day. With the addition of the action discs to the trolling arsenal, these soft plastics have gotten even better.
All of the above mentioned lures offer little or no action on their own when trolled off the downriggers or outriggers so the action disc is mandatory to get these rigs to dance. The disc also provides a great place to apply Pro-Cure's Trophy Trout Scent.
I have been covering the water column from the surface to 12 feet down with the best bite starting shallow and progressing deeper as the day moves along. With the long range forecast predicting more mild weather the Hot Winter Bite should continue.

CHETCO RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Rivers flows have been high, but should be good by the weekend.
There are lots of steelhead spread throughout the river.
Plunkers targeting steelhead from the many gravel bars along the Chetco will fare the best until flows drop to around 4,000 cfs. Anglers should always check the flows before heading out and try to fish when river levels are dropping.
ODFW is conducting a steelhead angler creel on the Chetco this year, along with Chinook salmon scale collection, and winter steelhead broodstock collection.  At times, these projects may interfere with an anglers fishing.  Please be courteous to all ODFW personnel and volunteers.

COMINS LAKE, WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Comins has about 10 inches of ice, though on warm afternoons the edges are soft. Fishing is poor due to the introduction and now overpopulation of pike.

The fishing season for Convict Lake is closed.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
The fishing season for Crowley Lake is closed.

EAGLE LAKE, CALIF:
The fishing season for Eagle Lake is closed.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
The reservoir is frozen over but rising water levels are keeping the edges very thin. Fishing is not recommended. Ice in the canyon may be thick enough for fishing, but anglers should use extreme caution.

FALL RIVER, CALIF:
The fishing season for Fall River is closed.

FEATHER RIVER, CALIF:
The fishing season for the Feather River is closed.

FREMONT LAKE, CALIF:
The fishing season for Fremont Lake is closed.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Wiggin’s Trading Post at Chilcoot (530-993-4683) reports:
The days have been nice and the nights have been cold, and the fishing is excellent at the lake.
Fishermen have been fishing in different areas of the lake, including Big Cove, Nightcrawler Bay, and at the dam.
The dam has ice about 9 to 12 inches thick, but there is water on top during the day light hours. So be careful if you choose to go out on the ice.
One fisherman caught three rainbow trout at Nightcrawler Bay using Power Bait (rainbow). They were 15 to 18 inches in legnth and weighed about 1 to 1 ½ pounds.
Fishing at the dam has also been good.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Water flow at 5 CFS. Nymph fishing is the best bet right now. Try small WD-40's Miracle Nymphs Pheasant Tails and Midge patterns. Fishing is good but the creek has been very crowded. Please do not wade here.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions: Great. Flows constant at 24 CFS as of 1/27.
Despite the recent snow, the water stays fairly warm, like 50 deg F as most of the water is coming from the spring, not runoff.
YOU CAN NOW DRIVE UP TO THE GATE AT THE TOP OF THE HILL BUT THE GATE IS NOW CLOSED. THE INTERPRETIVE SITE SECTION IS A SHORT WALK OR DRIVE WITH 4X4.
Fishing Conditions:
INTERPRETIVE SITE SECTION HAS BEEN EXCELLENT STARTING ABOUT 10 AM WITH BAETIS NYMPH PATTERNS
For the canyon section, you might stay with Midges all day despite surface hatches midday. They have really been producing.

ILLIPAH RESERVOIR, WHITE PINE, COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Just like Cave Lake, not much has changed here as Illipah has 8 inches of good ice.  No word on how fishing has been though this time of year it can be good.  Many anglers like to use a black jig tipped with a worm through the ice, fishing just off of the bottom.

JAKE'S CREEK (BOISE) RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Jakes Creek has safe ice and fishing has been good using worms for 14 to 16 inch trout.  Anglers may expect a limit for a morning’s worth of work.

JIGGS / ZUNINO RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Unfortunately, Jiggs has dried up.

JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF:
The fishing season for the June Lake Loop is closed.

KIRMAN LAKE, CALIF:
The fishing season for Kirman Lake is closed.

KLAMATH RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Releases out of Iron Gate are 1,030 CFS. Perfect conditions and good fishing is in order through this week. Recent weather has brought in bigger Steelhead as well as superb reports of fun times and great fishing!
Most of the smaller steelhead from fall are gone and what we have now are larger, 3-5 lb. steelhead, fresh from their long journey upstream.
These are the best of the best. Expect good reports to come out of the Klamath for a few weeks.

LAUGHLIN, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Colorado River: Anglers are still catching planted rainbow trout in the Laughlin area.
The best action is on night crawlers but floating baits and small lures are also having some success.
Stripers have been slow with best action on crank baits or anchovies.

MAMMOTH LAKES BASIN, CALIF:
The fishing season for the Mammoth Lakes Basin is closed.

MARKLEEVILLE CREEK CALIF:
The fishing season for Markleeville Creek is closed.

The fishing season for the Mason Valley W.M.A. is closed.

LAKE MEAD, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Striper action has remained fair at Temple Bar. Reports of 2 - 3 pound stripers are common. Evening remains the best time for striper fishing. Anchovies or sardines fished near the bottom in about 150 feet of water are the best bet for stripers. Trolling has been productive in the early morning and evening hours. At Echo Bay anglers have found success north of the launch ramp.
Action for smallmouth and largemouth bass remains slow, with some success through slow presentation.
The shad have left the area for the season. Some anglers have tried to boat up the Old Vegas Wash to seek shad, with limited success.
Water levels have been rising, with water levels much higher than this time last year. This has created many flooded brush areas.

LAKE MOHAVE, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Willow Beach striper action has been picking up this week. Most success is being seen on AC plug lures. There are reports of stripers up to 28 pounds, with the average striper weighing around 12 pounds.
Stocked rainbow have provided good fishing following weekly trout plants.
Cottonwood Cove has seen some striper action. A few 6 - 7 pound stripers have been caught in about 40 feet of water while still fishing. Drift fishing with cut anchovies has also been effective. Night fishing may also yield success with the stripers.
Largemouth bass fishing remains slow to fair with most fish hitting soft plastic baits.

OREGON PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) ( HYPERLINK "http://www.dfw.state.or.us.com" www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Recreational crabbing re-opened in the ocean on Dec. 15.
A few anglers have caught surfperch from the beaches near Coos Bay on days with lower ocean swells. Sand shrimp or sand worms are a very good bait to use when fishing for surfperch.
Fishing for bottom fish is open at all depths.
Rough ocean conditions are keeping anglers from fishing in the ocean.
Anglers may not retain Cabezon between Jan. 1 and March 31.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Upper Owens River: Current water flow is 77 CFS. Fishing is closed below the Benton Crossing Bridge. The river upstream is open to fishing all year.
Barbless artificials only. Zero limit.
Fishing is slow due to cold water temps and a lack of insect activity. Nymphing is the best bet. Try standard Nymph patterns like Pheasant Tails or Hares Ears. Cover lots of water.
Lower Owens River: Water flow is 256 CFS. Flows are steady. Fishing is picking with nicer weather in the forecast.
Olive WD-40's, Caddis larva and small Pheasant Tails.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Upper Owens Water conditions: Good. As of 1/24 flows have been stable at 77 CFS for a couple of weeks.
No more driving north of Benton crossing until some 4X4 with giant tires mashes down a path.
Fishing conditions: Good to Excellent.
Small midge dries around mid day, with bigger midges subsurface.
Big fish are still being reported in the system and lately just a couple of miles above Benton Crossing.
Do keep moving if you aren't getting grabs anytime after 10 am.
Go to streamers for the big guys.
Owens River Gorge:
Water conditions: Great. Flow: 45 CFS.
This is a permanent flow required to be maintained by LADWP
Fishing conditions: Excellent and nice and warm on cool sunny days this time of year.
Lower Owens Water conditions: Excellent. The flows are back up to 256 CFS and holding as of 1/24.
Crowley is jugged so little chance of it going down in near future.
Wading is getting tougher.
Overcast weather in forecast should help with not starting each day with temps in the teens and resulting cold water.
Fishing conditions: Good. The midday hatches are good but not wide open.
You might stay with midges all day and work the slooooow water.
Summer tactics are just not doing it.
Streamers producing, drifting is excellent to get to those inaccessible pools.
Could be some better hatches with overcast weather predicted.

PINE VALLEY COMPLEX, HUMBOLDT COUNTY, NEV:
The fishing season for the Pine Valley Complex is closed.

PIT RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Expect high, muddy water in Pit # 4 and # 5. Pit #3 will have good water conditions and great fly fishing for wild rainbow trout!
Bring tire chains, a shovel and let somebody know you are going to fish the Pit River ahead of time. There is a lot of snow down in the canyon and the possibility of getting stuck is high. Be careful if you go.

POORE AND SECRET LAKES, CALIF:
The fishing season for Poore and Secret Lakes is closed.

PYRAMID LAKE, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
George and Carla Molino of the Pyramid Lake Store (775-476-0555) (www.fishpyramid.com) reports:
On Jan 21, Matt Ceccarelli of Reno caught a 19-pounder (34.5 inches) by the Marina, and on Jan. 28, Geoff Roberts caught a 12.8 pounder from a boat. Boat fishing has been OK, the shore and fly fishing has been very slow.

ROOSEVELT AND LANE LAKES, CALIF:
The fishing season for Roosevelt and Lane Lakes is closed.

RUBY LAKE N.W.R., WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Harrison Pass is closed, so now anglers heading to Ruby Lake NWR will have to go the long way through Secret Pass.
The main body of the lake is ice covered and there are seven inches of ice at the boat ramp, but with the warm weather, it isn’t the best ice so use caution.
The collection ditch is open, and while fishing continues to be slow for numbers, a few anglers report catching fish between three and five pounds using very small Midge and Baetis Nymphs in combination with a larger Copper John.  The Copper John is used to get the smaller (size 18 to 22) Nymphs down to the bottom.
Smaller trout (15 inches) have been caught along the brown dike near where it enters the south marsh with # 14 Copper Johns fished under an indicator.  The water is still murky here. A few fish, though a bit smaller averaging 15 to 18 inches have been reported near Bressman Cabin.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (LOWER), CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Weather conditions are beautiful on the Lower Sacramento and the river conditions are ideal! Flows of 4,000 CFS make this a very friendly river for waders, but don’t forget to still wear your safety PDF.
Anglers fishing out of drift boats have been reporting spectacular results, with their focus on the shallow riffles, and casting their line about mid day. Best Flies: # 14-16 BH Pheasant Tail Nymphs,# 16 Skip's Nymph, # 6-8 Stonefly Nymphs like Zack's Thurmanator Stones and Pat's Rubber Legs. Mercer's BH Biot Golden Stones are a great choice lower in the river.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (UPPER), CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
The weather is great and the choice method for fishing the Upper Sacramento is boat fishing this week (the river flows are a bit high for safe wading at 650 CFS).
Prime Fly selections for the Upper Sacramento include # 6 black or brown rubber legs, # 8 Golden Stones like Mercer's Golden Stones and Zack Thurman's Thurmanator. Focus this week on bigger bugs like # 12 Bird's Nests, Shaffer's 3-D Nymph in olive or black. Fishing Wooley Buggers should get anglers tight to a few rainbows!

SAN FRANCISCO BAY AND OCEAN, CALIF:
J.D. Richey of www.fishingwithjd.com (916-388-1956) reports:
Well, the weather last weekend was such that nobody did a heck of a lot of fishing here. Things look to be mellowing out this week and anglers can get back out there.
Crabbing was still fair before the weather and probably the best thing to keep an eye on is the sturgeon action in the upper bays as the muddy water from the rivers moves in.

SAN JOAQUIN/RED’S MEADOW, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) ( HYPERLINK "http://www.performanceanglers.com" www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Road closed.

SILVER CREEK, CALIF:
The fishing season for Silver Creek is closed.

SMITH RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
The Smith is open to striped bass year-round, two fish per 24 hours, 24-inch minimum size. The Smith is now closed for trout fishing.
Steelhead fishing has been good. Most of the angling opportunity will be catch and release of wild fish; however, adipose fin clipped steelhead can be harvested in the Smith.

SOUTH FORK RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Just a week of warmer temps and rain and South Fork has a lead of open water that stretches from the moat on the west side of the lake almost to the campground on the east side of the lake.
Edges have been soft and anglers should steer clear of open water and the edges. The ice is approximately five inches at Jet Ski Beach, nine inches at the south end of the lake and seven inches near the main boat ramp on the east side of the lake.
Anglers should check ice thickness before venturing onto the ice until we get a few more inches of thickness.
Trout fishing is just fair. Most anglers are catching one or two fish for a morning or afternoon’s worth of work, but they are running from two to four pounds on average.
Again, due to the weather, not many anglers fishing this week, but chances are the same spots, Jet Ski Beach, Tomera Cove, and the main boat ramp cove will still be good areas to fish.
The south end of the lake in the middle near the original river channel may also produce some good fish.
Worms and Power Bait are the most popular presentations, though jigging a brightly colored lure tipped with a worm is worth a try.

TOPAZ LAKE:
Chuck and Linda Fields of the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550) reported:
The fishing has been decent with some nice fish being caught, but you have to work for them. Yesterday, four fishermen in two boats were just several fish short of four limits. They were each trolling with Rapalas with one pole 5-7 feet deep and the other pole 15-20 feet deep.
In addition, a 5-pound tagged fish was caught by a local fisherman.

TRINITY RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
The fishing has been good, and winter steelheads are pulling at the lines! Bring a few Mayfly Cripples, # 16-18 Quill Body Duns and a couple BWO Tilt-Wing Duns. Toss your dries on 9 ft leaders tapered to 5x. Expect to find rising brown trout and the occasional steelhead!
Best fly patterns include the # 8 TB Golden Stone, Mercer's Poxy-back BH Golden Stone, # 14 Red Copper John, Psycho Princes in various sizes and colors, # 12-16 PT Nymphs.
Egg patterns in pink, orange, peachy, salmon egg should be the fly box.
— Courtesy of the Fly Shop

TWIN LAKES, CALIF:
The fishing season for Twin Lakes is closed.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF:
The fishing season for Virginia Lakes is closed.

WALKER LAKE, MINERAL COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife ( HYPERLINK "http://www.ndow.org" www.ndow.org) reports:
No Lahontan cutthroat have been reported or seen at Walker Lake since 2009. Mineral County Road Dept. has done some work on the State Parks Launch. Launching is improved but you still need four wheel drive.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) ( HYPERLINK "http://www.thetroutfitter.com" www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
East Walker River Water Conditions: Good. Flat at 26 CFS for last 5 days as of 1/24.
Access will be tough with latest dump of snow.
Fishing Conditions: Excellent. Water is still cold but midday bite is strong to wide open!
Baetis-o-rama. Midges in the 18-20 range producing all day.
Overcast weather should make for better surface action.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) ( HYPERLINK "http://www.performanceanglers.com" www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
East Walker River: Most recent flow 25 CFS. No change here. Water is low and cold and fishing is tough. Try red or gray Midge pupa. Most of the surface is frozen.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
There is almost a foot of snow on the ice and close to two feet as you get off of the ice up the hills as well as 14 inches of good ice, so both anglers and snowmobilers can have some fun.
Fishing for trout has been fair to good with no report of any perch being caught this week.
With the snow and the warm afternoon temps, anglers will want good boots, as there will probably be some slush between the ice and the snow.
Anglers continue to catch 16 to 20 inch trout close to shore in less than 15 feet of water. Most of the fish are being caught high in the water column within two to three feet of the bottom of the ice.
Anglers are having the best luck using brightly colored jigs tipped with a piece of worm or wax worm.
Many of the trout are being caught off of the state park boat ramp in front of the rock face to the south and along the shore near the BLM campground.
Many of the fish are being caught very close to shore.
When perch were being caught a couple of weeks ago, they were in 32 feet of water north of the island and right on the bottom.
The Wildhorse Trout Derby at Wild Horse State Park will be held on February 18 and 19 over President’s Day weekend.
The cost is only $10 each day and there is 100% payout of all entry fees to the top three fish each day.
The Wildhorse Homeowners Association will be selling chorizos, hot dogs, hot and cold drinks as well as some bait and tackle, with all proceeds being split between the Association and Wild Horse State Recreation Area.
For more information call the State Park at 775-385-5939.

WILSON RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Expect 4WD only conditions and travel really isn’t recommended here due to the wet weather and warmer conditions that are being found on the Snake River Plateau. Last report was only 2 inches of ice and open edges and some open water and chances are this hasn’t changed. Not worth the trip.
