More than a dozen area manufacturing leaders gathered at Western Nevada College in Carson City on Friday to preview the latest technical training initiative in support of the Northern Nevada workforce. Siemens Technik Akademie Barlin, a worldwide leader in automation and mechatronics, is partnering with Western Nevada College to launch the Siemens Mechatronic Systems Certification Program.

“We learn from history that we learn nothing from history,” said Friedrich Hegel.

Last week in Reno former Soviet economic advisor Yuri Maltsev began a speech with that quote. We appreciated his remarks, although his message is an ominous one.

Yuri related some of his experiences growing up in Soviet Russia as a warning for people who think socialism is great. In his view, Americans are often far too cavalier about praising certain aspects of socialism and similar collectivism while failing to recognize socialism for what it truly is: state slavery.

When I submitted my entries to the Carson City Arts and Culture Coalition's "Focus On Carson" photography contest earlier this spring, the last thing I expected was to have been selected as a contest finalist.

Nevadans marked both Flag Day and the Army's 241st Birthday in a ceremony Tuesday at the Nevada Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds in Carson City.

Obama displays the perspective of a typical truth impaired, ignorant, partially educated, affirmative action, indoctrinated college student lacking basic knowledge of philosophy, economics and history.

What a wonderful community we live in. Music, theater, hiking, biking, wining, dining, walking, TED-talking, animal loving, state governing, and so much more are available in our valley. The days are getting longer and there is so much in store for us in the coming weeks and months as we journey into summer. Take a good gander at my list of what’s going on in the Carson City area. Nevada tourism officials attended the launch of the China Tourism Year in Beijing on Monday, marking a cooperative effort to increase travel between China and the United States.

Researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno have found that an instrument the scientific community commonly uses to measure mercury in the air yields inaccurate results.

Principal researcher Mae Gustin in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences has been leading the effort to determine the accuracy of a widely used mercury measuring instrument. The study is expected to support and inform regulatory decision-making aimed at protecting human and wildlife health.

Climate change is the cause of everything, even crime, prostitution and terrorism.
Those are among claims studies have made in recent years. With world leaders meeting in Paris this week to discuss a new global climate treaty, we'll hear more of these stories.

The terrorism connection, which blames the rise of ISIS (or the Islamic State) on climate change in Syria, is particularly noteworthy because President Obama said earlier this year that climate change is a greater threat than terrorism. We're guessing that will encounter some skepticism in Paris right now.

UPDATE 12:35 p.m.: The substance that led to the closure of the Carson City Sheriff's Office this morning has been identified as a gypsum-type material, according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Barricades on East Musser Street have been lifted and the road to the sheriff's office is open. The front office will open sometime after 1:30 p.m., said Furlong.

LAS VEGAS — Lt. Gov. Mark Hutchison presented the Nevada Commission on Tourism Legacy Award to Lorraine Hunt-Bono, former lieutenant governor and former chair of the Nevada Commission on Tourism at the Nevada Governor’s Global Tourism Summit Monday.

Last week I spoke with Cory, The Greenhouse Project manager about aging apple trees at his house that an arborist suggested he cut down and replace with dwarf varieties.

Although the apples have always been fruitful, the arborist thinks these trees are almost at the end of their productive years. Cutting down these old, yet healthy, trees may be acceptable from the standpoint of apple production, but since they also serve as shade trees, they would be a great loss in the overall landscape.

As of Saturday, I am retiring as the Outdoor Editor for Carson Now and a very special outdoor photographer (my wife Elaine) will also be retiring.
It's been a great run, full of great memories, but sooner or later all good things must come to an end, and Oct. 31 is that special time for the two of us.

St. Peter's Episcopal Church in downtown Carson City at Telegraph and Division streets offers its annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday November 14 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. This year's bazaar features crafters who won a total of 19 ribbons at the 2015 Nevada State Fair. One of those crafters has created this year's queen-sized quilt in a traditional English Ivy block pattern in tones of red, white, and blue to be raffled.
