Taste of Downtown Carson City 2015: A delicious accomplishment

Taste of Downtown gave guests a wide range of dinner entrees, promoted local businesses and supported Advocates to End Domestic Violence.
Carson City Historical Society Seeks Teapots for Exhibit in July
Submitted by editor on Sat, 06/20/2015 - 10:21amThe Carson City Historical Society is looking for unusual teapots it can borrow for its free Teapot Exhibit from July 1 through July 31, 2015, at the Foreman-Roberts House Museum, 1207 N. Carson St., Carson City. The teapots can be unique in some fashion: quaint, various sizes, elegant or funky.
Teapots on loan will be for display only. Some of the teapots on display will be from the Museum's own collection and are used for Sunday Afternoon Teas, such as those scheduled for August 9 and October 11.

Carson City Library 'Explore Your World' series continues with feature on Myanmar

Grayshield spent five months living in Yangon teaching English. Her enthusiasm about the country and culture is evident in the experiences she will share Wednesday evening. Join us to learn more about the nation tucked between China, India, and Thailand. In Grayshield’s words, “I want to take you through the charms of the country.”

Carson area artist hopes to create local works of art

Amodei: National security, way of life depend on mineral production
Submitted by editor on Wed, 04/22/2015 - 2:14pmCongressman Mark Amodei (NV-2), along with 29 original cosponsors, took steps Wednesday to address the strategic and economic vulnerabilities presented by mineral production, including rare earth elements — an industry dominated by China and other foreign nations.
The introduction of H.R. 1937, the National Strategic and Critical Minerals Act of 2015, is intended to address American dependence on foreign minerals and to enable the United States to more efficiently develop its own mineral supplies, upon which, according to a recent 60 Minutes report, “modern U.S. life depends.”

Continuing a winning tradition, UNR concrete canoe team takes regionals
Submitted by editor on Mon, 04/06/2015 - 3:29pmContinuing a winning tradition that began in 2006, the University of Nevada, Reno concrete canoe team won the regional qualifying event and is heading to the National Concrete Canoe Championship races for the 10th time in a row, to defend the school’s national championship title won last year.
The team dominated the seven northern California teams in the five race categories, paddling their 138-pound canoe, Aquatone, to win each of the races at the Mid-Pacific Regional Competition at Lake Natoma in Folsom, Calif. Friday, April 3.

Heavenly ski resort at Tahoe shifts to spring operations, Sierra launches lift ticket deal
Submitted by editor on Sun, 03/29/2015 - 5:44pmBeginning on Monday, March 30, Heavenly Mountain Resort at south shore Lake Tahoe will offer mountain access via the Heavenly Gondola in the Heavenly Village for the remainder of the season and Stagecoach Express through Sunday, April 5.
All mountain operations on the California side will close March 30, a week ahead of schedule. The resort will operate 11 lifts, accessing 27 trails. Mountain Operations staff continue to closely monitor and assess conditions daily. At this time the resort is still planning on closing on April 19.

UNR researcher: Big fish disappearing indicates freshwater ecosystem crisis
Submitted by editor on Thu, 03/19/2015 - 4:21pmPeople think of elephants, tigers and sharks as a bellwether for how the environment is doing, but monster fish, two dozen species of large freshwater fish weighing more than 200 pounds, are an alarming indicator of the health of aquatic ecosystems around the world.
“These big fish are in a steep decline,” Zeb Hogan, conservation biologist and researcher in the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Science, said. “The disappearance of aquatic animals is a freshwater extinction crisis.”

Sonia Carlson to speak, demonstrate calligraphy at Legislative Building March 19
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 03/11/2015 - 5:12pmGardnerville artist Sonia Carlson hosts a free Chinese Calligraphy workshop at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19 as part of the Nevada Arts Council’s “Work of Artists” series at the Nevada Legislative Building in Carson City.
The event runs until 5 p.m. in Room 3100. All “Work of Artists” presentations are free and open to the public.
Growing up in Zhangzhou, China, Carlson learned calligraphy in school and folk dances from her family.
