Carson City Cooperative Extension is looking for youth interested in the the 4-H 2017 Summer Day Camp. The camp is a week of fun and educational activities designed around exploring Carson City and surrounding areas.

Join us to explore the Carson River Watershed on a two-day bus tour. The Carson Water Subconservancy District is offering a bus tour of the Carson River Watershed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on June 6 and 7, 2017.

The Carson River Watershed "Get on the Bus" tour will cover a variety of watershed topics and locations from the headwaters in Alpine County, CA to the terminus at the Carson Sink near Fallon.

AmeriCorps Members Serving the Carson River Watershed

Twenty-eight AmeriCorps members are scattered throughout the Sierra Nevada with the role of restoring and monitoring Sierra watersheds, educating Sierra residents and visitors about environmental issues, and managing volunteers for local watershed programs.

Please drive safe when it’s slick out. ‘Our Story, Inc.’ takes you on a tour of Black History in Northern Nevada in the foyer of the Legislature; they’ll be on hand at the Carson Library this evening for a special Black History Month Celebration. Get a jump on spring cleaning and lend a hand to the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program. You’ll find their clothing drive at Red’s Old 395 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. Show off your skills at Retro Replay if you fancy yourself a Smash Bros.

Capital City Farm Days 2016 returns to Fuji Park April 21-22

Capital City Farm Days returns to Fuji Park and Carson City Fairgrounds April 21 and 22. The event is free and open to youth pre K-5th grade.

Presenters explain where and how we get our food and clothing. Interactive stations engage older students about the challenges facing modern farmers and ranchers: how agriculture affects our environment and how our environment affects agriculture.

Carson High School biology students move classroom outdoors

Three busloads of Carson City students arrived at Ambrose Carson River Natural Area Wednesday to study the Carson River watershed. Seventy-four high school biology students, trained by River Wranglers and Carson City Weed Coalition, met more than 90 fourth grade students and set about teaching and learning.

Mark Kimbrough chosen as 2016 Andy Aldax Award recipient

The Carson Water Subconservancy District has selected Mark Kimbrough to receive the 2016 Andy Aldax Carson River Watershed Award for Exemplary Service in Conservation and Protection of the Carson River Watershed. The award, created in 2007, recognizes individuals or organizations that actively demonstrate a 10-plus year commitment and accomplish plans and projects to improve and sustain the Carson River Watershed.

Carson River Coalition’s Floodplain Management Forum

Students to converge on the Carson River for 2014 Snapshot Day

Each year, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection works in partnership with other public agencies, educational institutions and nonprofit organizations to provide students with a unique opportunity to learn about local water quality issues, water quality protection, and to participate in watershed research.

These field studies provide a unique hands-on opportunity to learn about the Carson River watershed and the natural environment.

Carson water district responds to drought; enhances flows in the West Fork of the Carson River

Due to the ongoing drought, limited water in the Carson River impacts fish and wildlife habitats, especially by the end of summer. To enhance flows along the West Fork of the Carson River, the Carson Water Subconservancy District is utilizing their storage water rights to supplement water in the watershed.

Fallon students get their feet wet on Snapshot Day

Students from Logos Christian Academy in Fallon gathered recently at the edge of the Carson River with water quality professionals for the 8th annual Snapshot Day at Ft. Churchill State Park.

Volunteers from the Bureau of Land Management, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection and the River Wranglers came out to the river on October 18 to give students, grades 5 through 8, a chance to gain hands on experience with the science of river ecosystems.

Carson Water Subconservancy District names Brenda Hunt as new Watershed Coordinator

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Brenda Hunt has joined the Carson Water Subconservancy District staff as its new Watershed Coordinator. She replaces Genie Azad who left the district after nine years. Genie will continue natural resources work as a consultant.
Hunt earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Natural Resources from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Masters of Art in Environmental Science from Monash University located near Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Carson River Coalition ramps effort to fight aquatic invasive species threat

While much-needed attention is being paid to Lake Tahoe regarding invasive species such as the quagga mussel and Asian clams, there is growing concern among local wildlife biologists and water scientists of similar threats along the Carson River watershed.
