Music and hope in Carson City: Friday's 'HopeFest9' outdoor concert benefits cancer patients

Going into its 9th year, Carson Tahoe Health Foundation has brought together musicians and music lovers from throughout Northern Nevada and Lake Tahoe for a free summer concert celebration to raise money for area cancer patients. This Friday, HopeFest9 returns, with international platinum-selling singer-songwriter Eric Hutchinson and the Believers.

Classic cars of all makes and models filled Fuji Park Saturday during the sixth annual Send a Scout to Camp Car Show in Carson City.

Vintage cars and trucks lined up alongside each other while participants strolled around the park and soaked in the warm summer sun.

Carson City's Shoe Tree Brewing takes home medals in U.S Open Beer Championship

Shoe Tree Brewing Co. in Carson City received two Bronze Medals at the U.S Open Beer Championship held in Oxford, Ohio. Breweries from Russia to Rhode Island sent in more than 7,000 beers representing over 130 different styles for the 2019 U.S. Open Beer Championship.

Jim Barcellos of University Nevada Cooperative Extension leads his popular interactive science activity on Tuesday, July 9 from 10 to noon at the Silver City School House, 385 High Street. The activity is free and all children ages 8-12, with their parents, are invited to attend.

Fishing Report: Anglers are reeling them in during the warming weather

Hello fellow anglers. The official start of summer is only two weeks away and the weather has started to cooperate. Many of the passes are opening and the higher lakes are thawing out. Winter seems to get longer and longer each year. So enjoy the next two weeks of spring, because I have a feeling its going to be a hot year. Fishing has started to pick up all over the area, and with the school year ending for most kids, we are now in full camping mode. There are still some areas that are closed, due to the excessive winter we just had. I will try to keep you updated as the season progresses.

Dayton Valley and Lake Tahoe students compete in Scripps National Spelling Bee

There are two from the Northern Nevada area who competed in this week's Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Maryland.

Morgan Salvador, a 12-year-old 7th grader who attends George Whittell High School in Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe was Speller No. 284, while Morgan Bumgardner, Speller 275, is a 13-year-old Dayton Intermediate School student. He is listed as being from Mound House. Both students were, unfortunately, eliminated as they worked their way into the finals.

Forest Service continues effort to eliminate invasive plant populations from Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will continue a project to eradicate, control, and contain known infestations of invasive plants in the Lake Tahoe Basin using chemical treatment. Work will take place at approximately 90 infestations sites (105 acres) beginning in late May and continuing through September 2019.
