Carson City man breaks record with 50 hour speech, raises $25,000 for youth soccer

A Carson City man broke a world record Saturday morning for continuous public speaking and raised $25,000 for a youth soccer program.

Ian Hill finished at 8 a.m., some 50 hours from the time he began speaking Thursday morning at the Brewery Arts Center. With his voice raspy, and obviously showing signs of exhaustion, Hill was grateful for the contributions made from Carson City and across the country.

Outdoors with Don Q: Heat, fruit, traffic and travel this winter

For the last few years, Elaine and I have left Carson City for a short period of time during the month of February to temporarily escape our Western Nevada normally long and cold winter weather.
In those past years, it was a welcomed change from the ice, snow and cold of this general area to the warmth and lushness of the desert southwest.

Here are my top memories of this year, ranging all the way from right here in our very own Carson City to two islands in faraway Hawaii.

Outdoors with Don Q: It's dark and cold in the Far North

This is my annual reminder that November 18 was a significant date in the lives of some 4,212 hardy Alaskans (as of the 2010 census). Those folks live in a unique location known as Barrow, Alaska, which is the northernmost community in the United States.

It is located on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, about 320 miles north of the Arctic Circle, and roughly about 1,300 miles south of the North Pole. On November 18, the sun set below the horizon at Barrow and it will not peek back up over the horizon until January 23 (weather permitting).

UNR physicist says elusive dark matter may be detected with GPS satellites

The everyday use of a GPS device might be to find your way around town or even navigate a hiking trail, but for two physicists, the Global Positioning System might be a tool in directly detecting and measuring dark matter, so far an elusive but ubiquitous form of matter responsible for the formation of galaxies.

Outdoors with Don Q: Browsing favorite websites

As a person who spends a considerable amount of time, each and every day, having fun browsing at a number of internet websites from all over North America, I thought that it might be interesting, and perhaps even informative, to share some of those sites with you.

A first-time Musk Ox hunt in the High Arctic

About 5 miles away on the distant horizon, we could see black dots on the amazingly pure white, snow-covered, barren ground, 130 miles east of Tuktoyaktuk (Tuk), Northwest Territories, Canada.
Our guide Chuck Gruben of Tuk said there they are, let's get going.
This hunt was to be my first-ever musk ox hunt, my second-ever guided hunt.
It was something that I wanted to do for a long time.
I was sitting home one night and thought what the heck, I should go.
My wife agreed, so the necessary arrangements went into high gear.

Easy Company, 506th parachute infantry regiment, 101st Airborne Division was not the only band of brothers. Most of the 16 million men who served our country during WW II became closer to their shipmate or foxhole buddy than their own family. The First Special Service Force, the Black Devils, was a brigade of commandos from two nations, 60 percent USA and 40 percent Canadians.
