Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area remains closed to motorized activities due to lack of snow
The Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest's Bridgeport Ranger District remains closed to over-snow vehicles, like snowmobiles, due to lack of snow. Snow levels must meet the minimum requirement in order to open the area.
“We do not yet have enough snow in the area to support motorized snow activities,” said Kim Murcia, Recreation Staff Officer in a news release. “Without the proper amount of snow, natural resource damage can occur. Such damage is a violation of federal regulations and could carry a fine up to $5,000 and/or six months in jail."
The good news is a pair of winter storms will move into the Sierra beginning Friday and extending into the weekend. These storms could bring a foot or more of snow to the Eastern Sierra when all is said and done.
While the BWRA is closed to snow machines, those wishing to recreate outside at this time still have options.
“We don’t have much snow, but we do have enough for people wanting to enjoy what little we have,” said Murcia. “Visitors are still allowed to use this area for other recreational activities like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.”
