Northern Nevada Dream Center's DC Hire fills gap in Carson City community
Tucked inconspicuously into the iStorage business park off U.S. Highway 50 East in Carson City is the Northern Nevada Dream Center, a local non-profit known for helping meet the essential needs of low income individuals.
Since September 2015, though, it has also been addressing the technology needs of residents looking to better their lives.
That's the reason Susan Potts sought help from the DC Hire program at the Northern Nevada Dream Center.
“I am learning valuable computer skills that should help me find a better job," she said. "I like that I can work at my own pace while having a knowledgeable instructor there to answer my questions.”
For the past three years, DC Hire Program Director Alisa Johnson has taken the lead in offering technical skills instruction to job seekers as well as those who want to up their game toward a better job.
Johnson said DC Hire provides Carson City with a much needed service that had been missing in an increasingly technical job market.
"DC Hire was created to help fill that gap," she said. "The program is for anyone interested or compelled to learn technology."
This includes desktop computers, laptops, tablets and smart phones, Johnson said.
And while the target population is job seekers, DC Hire will also teach computer technology to local businesses and their staff, Johnson said.
"We encourage business owners and employees to join us to update skills to keep their business and jobs viable in today’s markets," she said.
Like the rest of the Northern Nevada Dream Center, DC Hire relies on volunteers dedicated to serving their neighbors and fulfilling a fundamental need.
“We are passionate about serving our community by helping them grasp a piece of technology," Johnson said. "Our friendly and understanding staff are here to help and encourage, so come check us out!"
Other specific areas in which DC Hire helps its clients is preparing for the high school equivalency exam, resume writing and interviewing skills, and Microsoft Office training.
The instruction format is one-to-one tutoring and learning is self-paced, so students get as much individual attention as they need. There is no cost to participate in the program.
The Northern Nevada Dream Center is situated near the back of the iStorage business park, located at 3579 U.S. Highway 50 East, Suite 211, in Carson City.
