Salvation Army in Carson City seeks to serve 500 with Turkey Drop
UPDATE: 6:18PM: Salvation Army Cpt. Mark Cyr has reported 344 turkeys were donated during today's 21st annual Turkey Drop. Monetary donations today amounted to $8,693.
"We're very happy with the results of the drive and the continued support from the community," Cyr said.

The parking lot at the Max Casino, 900 South Carson Street in Carson City, is site of this year's Salvation Army Turkey Drop, going all day Friday until 6 p.m.
As of 11 a.m. Friday morning, the Salvation Army in Carson City had already collected about one-third of its turkey and cash donation goals for its 21st annual event, sponsored this year by the Max Casino.
Salvation Army Cpt. Mark Cyr said about 500 qualified individuals or households have registered to receive Thanksgiving meals from the Carson City Salvation Army this year, so Friday's annual Turkey Drop looks to collect at least as many birds.
"We're trying to get 500 turkeys because we've got just under 500 people that we're going to be helping this season," Cyr said.
The non-profit organization is also looking to raise $10,000 in cash donations to off-set the costs already spent on preparing Thanksgiving meals for those in need, he said.
"With the money that we raise, we go out and buy the necessary turkeys as needed," Cyr said. "We've already spent just under $10,000 on food to make the boxes of complete meals."
Along with a turkey, those registered for meal assistance from the Salvation Army this Thanksgiving will also receive complete boxed meals, Cyr said.
On Saturday, Nov. 17, the Salvation Army in Carson City will be busy assembling these boxes to put meals in for the individuals and families in need this season.
Cyr said he could actually use some extra hands to help assemble the boxes Saturday at the Salvation Army's Colorado Street location, cross of South Roop in Carson City.
"We could use some volunteers tomorrow at 10 a.m. at 661 Colorado Street to help make those boxes," he said.
The Carson City Kiwanis Club was already out Friday helping the Salvation Army collect turkeys at the Max Casino drop location.
Kiwanis member volunteers Sheryl Knight and Martha Cherney said the Turkey Drop is one of many ways the Carson City Kiwanis Club shows its support for the Salvation Army.
"We do a lot of work with the Salvation Army," they said. "We love doing this for the community."
Cyr said it's the volunteers and the donors through the Carson City community that make the biggest difference for the Salvation Army this time of year.
"For 21 years now the community has been supporting the Salvation Army in helping serve the community," he said. "What a blessing that is. It takes a lot of support for an event like this to happen."
Today's annual Turkey Drop event runs into 6 p.m. at the Max Casino parking lot in Carson City. Monetary donors can drop their donations off at the turkey drop site, or they can make online donations at carsonturkeydrop.org.
