Carson City weather: Valley rain and Sierra snow expected Sunday
While Carson City was treated to a Nevada Day that brought sunny afternoon skies following some early morning fog, quite the opposite is in store for Sunday, with rain in the valley and snow in the Sierra, according to the National Weather Service.
Conditions are expected to change Sunday after 11 a.m. with an 80 percent chance of rain for Carson City
during the day and a 40 percent chance at night. Highs will be in the mid 50s. Monday will bring partly sunny skies with a chance of rain Monday night.
Snow is expected in the Sierra on Sunday prompting a Winter Weather Advisory from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Snow showers will become intense early Sunday morning and will last through the day Sunday, according to the weather service. Snow levels are expected to lower to 6,000 to 6,500 feet by late morning.
For the Lake Tahoe Basin, the weather service says there's a chance of 6 to 18 inches of snow above 7,000 feet with up to 6 inches down to 6,500 feet and 2 inches at lake level. There could be a dusting of snow in the hills above Carson City.
With the lowering of snow levels, travel impacts are likely over Sierra passes including Spooner, Kingsbury Grade, and Mt. Rose.
The weather service advises to have a full tank of gas, good traction on your tires, carry chains, extra food/water and have an emergency travel kit. See the Caltrans website here and NDOT here for the latest road conditions.
