New Carson City animal shelter to break ground Oct. 14 with ceremony
Carson City will break ground on the new Animal Services facility on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 9:30 a.m. Attending the ceremony will be Carson City Public Works officials, the City Board of Supervisors, Carson Animal Services Initiative, and representatives of the Nevada Humane Society.
“We’re incredibly excited to get this project underway,” said Nick Marano, City Manager. “We’ve been grateful for the support from the Humane Society and CASI and can’t wait to see the impact this facility will have on our city.”
Speakers at the ground breaking will include Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell, Lisa Schuette of CASI and representatives from the Nevada Humane Society. CASI will kick the celebration off at 9 a.m. with coffee, juice and pastries and the ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. The facility will be located on Airport Road in Carson, just south of the intersection of Airport Road and Butti Way.
The new facility will replace the current shelter on Butti Way, which was built in the 1960’s. The new facility will be approximately 10,000 square feet and will accommodate 134 dogs, 104 cats and seven exotics. Shaheen Beauchamp has been hired as the general contractor of the new facility.
Funding for the shelter is coming from revenue from a 1/8 percent sales tax and donations from Nevada Humane Society and CASI. The Nevada Humane Society will operate the new facility upon its completion.
