UPDATE: Snow fell over some of the highest areas of the Sierra Nevada overnight, including East Peak at Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort. Is it a harbinger of what's to come? It appears so. Heavenly officials were thrilled at the snowfall, noting that it creates a buzz for the upcoming season.
"This trace amount of snow that fell at Heavenly is very exciting and has us thinking about winter and what's to come. While the snow won't stay on the mountain long, it does make us hopeful of what's to come," said Sally Gunter, spokeswoman for Heavenly Mountain Resort. Heavenly will begin making snow at the end of October. Opening day for Heavenly is Nov. 21.
Meanwhile, here's an update on the potential for more snow in the Sierra tonight and Saturday. The National Weather Service in Reno provided an afternoon update and it shows the snow levels dropping with accumulation possible in the mountain above Lake Tahoe.
Snow levels will fall to 7,000 to 8,000 feet with an outside chance of reaching 6,000-6,500 feet early Saturday morning. Most accumulations will be above 8,000 feet, where 3-6 inches are possible. A couple inches may accumulate as low as 7,000 feet.
Travel impacts will be limited to the higher Sierra passes in Alpine and northern Mono counties (Highways 4, 108, 120). Snow may cover the road on Carson Pass (Highway 88) and the Mt Rose Summit. Those driving over Echo Pass and Spooner Summit (Highway 50), and Donner Pass (Interstate 80) tonight and Saturday Morning will encounter wet and/or slushy roads.
