Overwhelming response for Sept. 16 showing of movie 'Trans' requires a larger theater, tickets on sale
For one night only, an opportunity to see the movie “Trans” takes place in Carson City on Monday, September 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the Galaxy Theater, 4000 South Curry Street. When first announced, the event quickly filled theater capacity and “sold out,” but multiplex Galaxy quickly scheduled the screening in a a larger theater, and there are now ample seats available.
The award-winning documentary is both intimate and insightful as it describes the life stories of real people. “Trans” tells the stories of “… young children, teens, older middle-class whites, people of color and sex workers. Their stories are good, bad and tragic. Their lives are shown realistically, honestly and with no holds barred,” wrote movie critic Liz Laventure.
PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) Carson Region arranged the screening in response to an upsurge in requests for support at their regular meetings from transgender persons or their family members.
“For the last six years, people have come to our PFLAG meetings for support regarding gay and lesbian issues,” said Pam Graber, chapter secretary. “Typically, our drop-ins were parents seeking guidance as their teenaged sons or daughters came out. But in recent months, it has changed. Now people come to meetings and say, “My loved one is transitioning — how do I handle it?”
Transgender refers to individuals whose identity does not conform to conventional notions of male or female gender roles, but combines or moves between these. Transgender is about being assigned a sex at birth, but knowing that this is a false or incomplete description of oneself. The term transgender is preferred to transsexual because the transition applies to all aspects of personhood, not just one’s sexuality.
PFLAG is presenting the movie “Trans” to inform and educate people about what transgender is and what it isn’t. “We (PFLAG members) want people to understand, accept and include them,” said Pam.
