Carson City sheriff's candidate Bob Guimont names sergeant as his choice for undersheriff
Carson City candidate for sheriff Bob Guimont has selected Sgt. Darrin Sloan as his choice for undersheriff.
Sloan, 47, is a 20-year employee of the Carson City Sheriff's Office, four of those as a volunteer reserve officer and the past six as a sergeant both in the jail and on patrol. Prior to this was employed by the Carson City School District for nine years and served in the U.S. Army.
"The selection was difficult because I had three very strong candidates. I picked Sgt. Sloan based on his dedication to this community. He has worked in Carson City for 29 years, he's highly respected and his commitment is second to none."
Guimont said Sloan has a firm understanding of the department and the economic challenges it faces.
"Darrin has never once asked how much money he would be making. He understands he would be taking a pay cut as undersheriff," Guimont said. "What's impressed me the most is his commitment. We share the same goals of how to make this community a better place."
Sloan said he's committed to the job if Guimont is elected.
"It was an honor that he approached me to take this position," Sloan said. "The deputies and staff and citiizens of this community who have known me and have dealt with me know that I can do the job."
A new and aggressive approach to ridding the city of drugs and street gangs and solving traffic issues is at the forefront of the Guimont campaign. Sloan said he shares the same vision and believes that's why he was picked.
"Bob and I both have the same philosophies. We both want to see the same commitment to attack the problems in the community and we are both on the same page with this," Sloan said.
The new approach to drugs, gangs and traffic is more aggressive, Sloan said. The balance is to put the measures Guimont has laid out to work, emphasizing courtesy and respect from officers to the community.
"My experience has been that you treat people the way you would want to be treated whether it is an officer or fellow citizens," Sloan said. "Bob's new approach does this. We both feel that the way the department has gone after these problems, hasn't worked. Our approach will be to be more aggressive."
Sloan lives in Carson City and has a wife and son.
