Sen. Harry Reid secures money for Carson City JAC bus facility upgrades
With public transit ridership in the Capital City continuing to climb because of the recession, money for Carson City's Jump Around Carson bus program has been promised as part of a $2.1 million transportation improvements plan secured by Sen. Harry Reid.
Carson City has operated the Jump Around Carson service since October 2005, and is governed by the Carson City Regional Transportation Commission. The JAC service operates on a fixed route system through four routes serving much of Carson City as well as a dial-a-ride program that provides curb-to-curb transportation for people with disabilities.
While the amount has yet to be determined, the money will go toward improvements to the Carson City JAC bus stops and maintenance facilities, according to a press statement from Reid.
“Without bus service, some residents can’t get to the grocery store, the doctor’s office, or even to their jobs,” said Reid. “This investment in buses and vans in Nevada’s cities as well as our rural areas means more freedom for those who live and work here.”

JAC buses operate between 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Each route operates on 60 minute cycles. The JAC operates on four distinct routes: Routes1, 2A, 2B, and 3 and free transfers are available between each of the routes. Outside of the JAC area, there are a handful of public transit systems that specifically connect to Carson City. They are the Douglas Area Rural Transit (DART); the Spooner Express and the Virginia City Express.
Ridership continues to climb as locals learn of how practical and value-added it is to take the bus to and from work, school, shopping, medical appointments and recreation facilities, according to the JAC website.
Bus fare is $1 per one-way trip for adults. Seniors, persons with disabilities and youth may ride for only 50 cents per one-way trip. Transfers are available.
